I'm in the process of remounting the grills on either side of the tail light and noticed that I don't have a gasket between the lens and the black base with the lamp sockets. Should there be a gasket there? When I attach the lens it bottoms out on the posts that the screws go through before the edges of the lens touch the base. There's about a 1/16" gap, so a 1/8" thick gasket would probably be about right.

It also appears that the lens and base have both had some material removed (3/16"-1/4") along the bottom edge. Was this light assembly some "off the shelf" item that Buell modified to fit?

The other thing I noticed is the black inner part of the tail section (where the license plate mounts) isn't "square" to the painted part (where the light is). Is there some way to realign these two pieces, or are they permanently joined together?

I've always read that the S2 still had some evidence the pre-HD Buell "hand crafting", I think this tail section is probably a good example of that.

Gasket? Yes!

Material removed? Yes! The taillight is actually a Moto Guzzi piece. A search on here should turn up some info on it.

License plate mount *permanently* joined to the rest of the tail section? Depends... The 2 pieces were glassed together. It is possible to remove the 'joining glass' and re-glass it in, if someone has the skills - and audacity to endure the glass itchiness. But if it works as is, why bother? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Besides any adjustment of the license plate bracket would put it into a different position - which may (or may not) cause other unpleasant issues.

BINGO! Damn near everything on an S2 is a good example of that. RTM (Resin Transfer Mold) bodywork = LOW volume, hand made (but outsourced) frames = LOW volume, billet components (early triples, front brake caliper) = LOW volume, the list goes on...

S2 - planned for an estimated 400 units, but more than 3 times that many made in 1995...
