Doing a bit routine maintenance today so checked the static timing.

Who needs the break out tool when you can just use the 1st and 3rd wires off the grey side of the ECM to read the voltage.

Going by the Manual it says to rotate the timing plate clockwise (is this retarding timing?)to get the Volt meter to read 5 volts but on mine i had to move it anti clockwise (advancing timing?)?.
It is already 3/4's of the way advanced according to the lines on the Timing plate,is this normal?.Thats how i read it
advance is clock wise?.

I tried with the timing mark just coming into the window and centered still ended up at the same place on the plate.

Come'on some one please chime in?....

The spark seems to be breaking down @3250rpm, cleans up nicely and pulls strongly after that.
Is the Timing to far retarded/advanced?.

Plugs where sandblasted clean and gapped @40thou..

Edit; just found this,by Jos51700
If your X1's timing is off, set it straight up in the window (Advancing it will not make more power, it makes it run so poorly though the midrange, that when it comes out of the flat spot, it feels like it's really strong, because it's just coming back to life).

On the FI bikes, the timing controls both injection and spark timing. That "spark breakdown" that you're experiencing is probably the over-rich condition caused by improper ignition timing. (the short-runner intake allows a lot of cross-feeding if the injection is too early or too late).
Straight up, and let the ECM control the timing!

possibly a stupid question, but does strait up mean right in the middle of the adjustment window?

To be honest, I never cared. I just move it till it's straight up and move on.

CW should be advance IIRC. }
