i had a 95 s2 in red with white frame with racing module , racing cams , buell heads and matching pistons ( dont remember if they were thunderstorm or lightning ) with bath tub pistons , thunderslide in carb stage 3 and supertrapp exhaust . i sold the bike after my wife totaled her car and i had tweaked the bike where it was a little to fast

fast forward 6 years and i still miss that bike so im looking at 2 different bikes , 1 is a 96 s2 with 16000 miles for $2700 the other is a 2000 m2 for $2000 with 7000 miles

im leaning towards the m2 and putting a air tech body on it

what are the pros and cons to these 2 bikes

so 1 vote for the m2 ( i guess thats what vid ment )
i think i can get m2 for $1800 but the tach is broken and dent in exhaust right at front pipe first bend , both bikes need a good clean and new paint

IMO, the S2 is the sexiest motorcycle ever produced. (coming from a guy who only owns an S3, X1, and Uly - so I'm NOT biased)

Yeah I'd go with the S2 hands down.

if i get the m2 id put a s3 fairing on it and a airtech manit tail section on it making a home brew solo seat s2 kinda . and yes the s2 is the sexiest bike buell ever made but i know nothing about the 96 was it just like the 95 ?

AFAIK there were never any major changes to S2 models. I know very little about pre-99 tubers though.

Correct me if i am wrong but did'nt pre 99 buells have the same bolt together crankshaft as sportsters and post 99 have pressed together, lighter cranks and therefore rev higher.

There are lots of horror stories of m2 and x1 cranks failing often due to oil pump drive gear failure and poor maintainance.

Parts are available to repair the bolted crank but the pressed cranks have to be replaced as a complete unit or replacement parts have to be made.
Which ever one you go for i would check the oil pump drive gear has been upgraded for the bronze one (part 26391-06) . Also drop the oil and check there is no debris (metal particles) in the oil tank

I had the same problem.

I'm in Ca so the prices on bikes are a bit higher. I was looking at a nice modded 96 S1 with 10k miles on it for 4.5k or a 00 M2 w/ 7k for 2.9k...I picked the m2, have spent about 500 so far in aftermarket rocker covers, led turn signals, mirrors, etc...I love the m2, its smooth...i would pick the m2....

+1 PK

I think the S2 is an instant classic. One of the sexiest bikes next to an oldschool 916.

They will prove very hard to find in the next few years.

I have an S1 and an 1125cr but would LOVE to have a stock S2.

BUELLers:

Now that HARLEY-DAVIDSO MOTOR COMPANY shut down BUELL MOTOR COMPANY, any BUELL from 1996 or older would be a good choose as they are more H-D PARTS orintate'ed ...

The next best choose would be a M2 of any production run year or anything before fuel injection(X1/S3) ...

Just for information, "No" XB before 2008 and any BLAST from 2000 on(until they up-date to fuel injection) ...

Only reason "i" bought my 1997 S3T was the FAIRING ...

"MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!"

correct me if im wrong but the crank and fly wheels are interchangable from a buell to a sporty so if the press crank fails i just put in a sporty crank and fly wheels , and the rubber mount sporty heads from 04 to 06 will bolt up , so that solves replacement head problem . and a cv carb is a cv carb so no problem thier ,

I bought a 2000 M2 last spring and love it. I have been looking for a S3 fairing to mount as well and that would give me a great bike to ride and be powerful and comfortable at the same time. The S2 is a classic, it is what you miss, and already has nice body work. So if you are getting it cheap enough to freshen up the motor you can have whatever power level you want and can afford.

So...

M2 if buying to ride lot's of miles and not planning many upgrades.

S2 if classic status and getting your old bike "feel" back is the main criteria.

Either way, both good options and this is a buyers market.

the press fit cranks were nothing new to hd they went back and forth during certain production years.the worst wouldbe to repin it with the larger pin and better rods, may as well offset bore them and gain a few ci.in displacement or just check and/or replace the gear.

the m2 would be my last choice of any buell, if only cuz of its forks. (well, 2nd-to-last, if the blast counts, haha!) the s2 is the nicest looking buell ever made, imo, and a fantastic ride, if the motor is brought up to spec. no way i'd consider an m2 over an s2. but, i am biased, as i own an s2.

4Cammer:

From the time the TUBE FRAME fuel injection system came out to the XB 2007 year the STEALERSHIP had to set the TPS(throttle position sinsor)"OR" you had to buy the BLACK BOX to do it "OR" find someone in the neighbor hood that bought the BLACK BOX that could do it for you ...

the fi bikes scare me because i can not work on them as easy , as far as s2 being better because of usd forks , this might be true but forks are easy to change

"the fi bikes scare me because i can not work on them as easy"

I feel totally the opposite because I've little experience working on a Carb bike.
You will be surprised to see how easily you could run diagnostics and tune the bike using the ECMSPY software. It allows you to tweak the fuel delivery over the entire RPM range. You can also monitor engine performance in real time while riding the bike.
