I just removed the rear wheel and found the brake bracket allen bolt resting on the top of the swingarm. It clearly appears said bolt should ride in the slot.
I hope this makes sense.

Yes, it should be in the slot.

Thanks Brinnutz. It was pretty obvious. The previous owner had the tire changed at an official HD/Buell shop so I am not suprised.
5k miles riding with a "full floating" brake.
One good rollback with firm braking would have severed the brakeline.

Damn, the bolt on my bike ('00 X1) is also resting on the top of the swingarm! Probably at least since I had the tire changed (by the dealer) over 3000 miles ago!
So how do I put it inside the slot?

P.S. The assembly feels real rigid but I suppose a hard push on the brake while rolling the bike backwards could move the entire assembly. Thanks a lot for posting.

Pull the axle and drop the right wheel spacer then move wheel to the right and line the brake anchor bolt with the slot in the swing arm.

Getting the spacer back in requires dropping the wheel below the swingarm and raising everything into place at the same time, a third hand comes in handy.

PS
Remove the caliper, makes wheel installation much easier.

Put the new tire on today and went for a scrub in. I now feel as confident as I did on the XB.
I firmly believe you are better served doing your own work.
The shop manual and some patience will save money and perhaps your life.

Thanks Jim. I am now a bit pissed at the dealer. They're usually pretty good since they have a couple of Buell enthusiast mechanic on the staff. Well, this is what I'm gonna do... As soon as the weather warms up for a ride, I'll go to the dealer and show them what they did. Then I'll camp there until they get it fixed. I think they'll do it.

There will probably be a nice little wear spot on your swingarm from it...see if they'll pay for that too, LOL

Wow Just Wow is right, I'm out in the shop and after looking at both my tubers I don't see how anybody could stretch the anchored brake line that much .

this is funny. Mine has been resting on the top of the swing arm since i bought the bike 2 years ago. I was wondering what the slot was for!

I'm new to this section. I've had a '99 X1 for 4 months. You guys just had me in my garage checking the positioning of my rear brake caliper. It's stuff like this that makes Badweb so valuable. Mine seems to be in the right position but thanks to all for the "heads up" on this.
