I understand that Buell made a Race Computer for the tube-framed buells, does this work with all FI buells? Or model specific?

What sort of gains are to be expected?
ANd what is going price of one of these units?

Race ECM's are available for'99-'02 X1's & S3's.

Looking at your location you should be able to get a "local" to burn and load the maps for you.

Burn & Load onto a Race Computer? Or onto my stock computer?
What sort of gains are to be expected?

You fetch the stock maps out of the stock ecm and save them for backup then install the race ecm maps.

My S3 has the race ecm and runs stronger in the mid to upper rpm range than my X1 which has a stock ecm.

I am interested in this - is anything required to do this? Anything to purchase?

You'll need a copy Ecmspy, the instruction manual for it and the cable.

The cable runs $45-50
The Spy used to be a free down load but the author took the site down a few months ago.

I just got started with it a couple of weeks ago my myself with the help of another BadWebber,I'm a computer dummy so it was intimidating at first.

The Race fuel maps provide a richer mixture pretty much across the board and the timing is also slightly different to match the fuel delivery. I did a bit of experimentation with the stock vs. Race maps on my X1 and noticed hardly any difference when my X1 was bone stock. When I put the V&H and Forcewinder on the bike with the stock maps, the power delivery improved but the bike ran too lean. I then changed over to the Race maps and the lean issue was totally addressed and the throttle response felt a bit more linear.
This is all seat of the pants evaluation and essentially focused on the mid-range performance. Folks who push their bikes hard may have a different experience since in a lot of cases the power gains are way up in the tach range and my X1 tends to have a more sheltered life.

To add to Kalali's comments, I did similar comparo and found that the Race ECM NEEDS a less restrictive intake and LOVES the race header.

With the "RACE COMBO" - ECM, Intake & Header, it made a HUGE difference. The midrange of the bike LAUNCHES the bike out of corners. But without the "COMBO", Kalali is correct, not much of a difference.

ECM Spy is a great addition as you can "customize" your fuel & timing to what you are actually running (in addition to other PM stuff). But if the bike is stock, the standard ECM is a good system.

So where is this leading for Hybrid? ECM Spy / Race ECM isn't a "one $hot fix". Look at what you want to change (more bottom end, fix the midrange dip, more top end), THEN decide how you are going to get there.

But if you want a faster bike, it's NOT the engine you want to change.

Analogy time? Sure, why not. You don't go to McDonalds to order Fried Chicken; you first figure out what you're hungry for before you decide on what you're going to buy...

Any way you look at it, the ECMSPY and the cable will pay for itself the first time you either need to reset your TPS or have to find out why your red dash light (check engine light) is flashing or staying on. If nothing else, it is just an awesome toy with tremendous potential. Just use is carefully because it can do some serious damage to the bike.

Tell me more about this TPS please, what does that do?

And who sells the ECMSPY cable?

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor.

The sensor reads the butterfly opening in the throttle body and sends this info to the ecm which in turn sends the signal to the injectors on how much fuel to inject.

When the TPS setting gets a little off the bike will run like a carbed bike that needs a jet cleaning or adjustment.

The cables are available on ebay and some of the members on this board.

I got my cable from Al at American Sport Bike. But be careful when you visit their site. You will see a lot of stuff that you did not know you needed (or wanted)...
Great folks to deal with.

The stock ecm is not that great, it got its balls cut by the epa.

I know this because I met the man who worked at the factory that made these ECMs and ran x1's down an airport runway at 140mph everyonce in awhile and got paid to do it. He was a project manager or someone on the manufacture and tuning team.

They moved that factory out of my area of the country several years ago. I was given a name, and I may try to contact that person in the spring to learn more about this ECM.

Can using the ecmspy also change the rpm limit???. I got 2 factory x1 "race" ecms, one with a 6800rpm limit and the other with a 7000rpm limit. Sure would be nice to be able to raise them up a few hundred.

Raise the rev limit with ecmspy?
You sure can in 100 rpm steps but why?

To me for street use that would be like modifying the governor on a John Deere tractor used for bailing hay.

IMHO, the max. REV limit for a roller bearing bottom end is 6800 RPM, "BUT" to shift at 6800 RPM you need the REV limit set at 7000 RPM ...

Lets put it this way, if at 6800 RPM you have reached max. TORQUE and HORSE POWER why REV any more because it is either time to shift OR UP the GEARING to stay at 6800 RPM ...

"i" can a sure you that when you blow the bottom end it will ruin your day and the $$$ DOLLAR's $$$ will then start to flow to fix it ...

Some thing no one ever talks about on BWB'ers is sitting the timing correctly for REV'ing 6800 RPM ...

Thanks, thats good to know about ecmspy, would like to reset rpm limit to 7500. My engines are not stock. I am really not up on it but will have to look into this ecmspy thing when time comes, boy I wonder if the ecm could be reprogramed to supply enough fuel for using dual x1 throttle bodys?, would be neat to try this first before I get 2 carbs.

STILL IMHO, 7K limiter is all you need ...

If a ECM will run two THROTTLE BODIES of the correct size for your engine set up, it will definitely run better ...

Remember each cylinder is a unique engine unto its self ...
