G'day all ; )

I recently did my first track day at Queensland Raceway. It was a very hot and muggy 40 degree Celsius and track was about 50 plus!!

My first session I was nervous as hell! but after after 5 laps started to get more confidence. I had a little tuning drama in that the engine was pinging very badly and I had no drill to remove the rivets in the timing cover I made the mistake and kept running! which ended my day towards the end of the 3rd session!! Bugger!!!!

Anyway here's the all the pictures I bought of the professional track photographer. I can't wait to rebuild the bike and go again! My goal will be to destroy some knee sliders : )

Oh that's not too hard, from your pics you're just about there anyway, you just need to hang off a bit especially if your pegs are in the stock position (seems like they are since you're tall), they'll likely touch the same time your knee does. From your pics it looks like you may have dragged your toes already.

Feeling that puck slide along the asphalt is addicting. Can't wait to hit the track again, street riding has lost a bit of its flavor since riding the track.

Too bad about the motor.

Little is right. Your not far from the knee. I would suggest moving your feet back on the pegs so your touching with the balls of your feet. This will give you more feel and let you slide to the cheek more when cornering. Looks like you could have put your knee out and had it touch your so tall.

Once you get that knee down your gonna wonder what was so hard and why it took so long.

Don't buy cheap tires is my number one recommendation for track days.

Suggested read: Keith Code's "A twist of the wrist" 1 and 2. Simplifies the mental aspect of the track and makes it more reactionary.

Thanks for the advice ; )

I'm running Pilot Powers and they were new when I went to the track : )

Even though my bike started as an S3 the longer swingarm and raised ride hight have given more ground clearance. Plus my foot pegs are shortened by nearly and inch and I have now made a new rear brake pedal for more clearance.

Jodie I got a laugh outa the shocker, looks good on the track,

I hate to see the motor went south errr well, went North on you, which cylinder did that? I presume that the rear one did

any metal go any where else?

Not sure what you mean by the shocker?
It was the rear cylinder mate and it looks like all the melted metal from the piston just lined the bore! I'm going to pull the motor out and pull it down this week and start the cleaning ready for the BIG BORE ; ) stripping the cases for new paint etc.

I'll have to start a new Mutant Monster Engine Rebuild Thread! : )

they didnt have any race fuel at the track? running some 100+ octane would have helped the ping some.

i go to the local airport and fill up on 100 low lead for when i go out on weekends and beat the motor around. smells good too :P

ive heard the small amounts of lead help keep the enigne cooler (most aircraft are air cooled engines) and the octane surely helps with pinging

We tried getting av gas the night before but they had the bowser isolated! filled up with BP Ultimate 98 plus we added an octane booster, the pinging was my fault as I messed with the timing the day before and couldn't quite see the timing marks with my headers covering part of the timing hole!
I'm running a 200 main jet and a 45 idle jet so I don't think it was too lean. Timing, heat and high revs seem to be the problem.
I'll get the new engine dynoed before my next foray on the track.

Stuff the environment and tree huggers! bring back Leaded fuel! ; )

Joe,

I run a little more than 11:1CR on my M2 on the track, with nothing more than 93 octane unleaded. Race gas is nice for the hp gain or if you're at 13:1, but its not really required. Once you fix your timing (and pistons, of course) you should be fine.

If you keep up the trackdays you'll want those pegs higher. Even the X1/S1 peg locations were too low for me, especially on the shifter side. It will get problematic to shift up on corner exits.

hey jodie, glad to see that you got on the track. although if it was me, i'd be scared as anything to take the mutant out. just because i would be worried about it. but that's not whay you spent all that time and money on, is it.

totally bumbed about the motor. know the feeling. just wish i had your talent for bike build then it wouldn't have bothered be so much. can't wait for you to get started and finished with that job to see what she does.

what jim was talking about with the shocker, was in the third pic above the cylinder pics, looks like gesture that your doing with the left hand is the shocker. holding the finger next to the pinky with the thumb.

Joe,

The profile pic was from a good year, I think I did five or six trackdays that year.

I'm 6'2, and have had numerous ground clearance issues with the M2 at the track. I have moved my pegs up about 4" from stock M2/S3 locations, and back around 4" too. With the clip ons, I'm folded up like a swiss army knife on the bike, it would SUCK as a street setup.

I also use non-folding pegs which effectively shortened them by 1.5" per side.

I also made a front shock bracket that raises up the rear of the bike about 1"; with my bike on the stand the swingarm is at its extension limit.

All of those things were enough to keep my toes from dragging, and to keep the bellypan off the ground.

You might try a stiffer rear spring, and maybe peg locations closer to stock X1/S1 locations.

G'day Neil mate ; ) I did build it to ride the hell out of it! : )
I wished I lived over there as parts are so bloody cheap I would stock up on all those tube frames I keep seeing on ebay! for my many project ideas and to make sure if something ever did happen to the mutant I could build another!

Ben I'm 6'5! so I know what your saying when it comes the swiss army knife comment! ; )
To give you an idea of my bikes stance the seat height is 850mm stock seat height is only 750mm for an S1. I'll see it goes at the next track after the rebuild before I go changing peg locations. I was using all the rear tyre at the track and had about 10mm of chicken strip on the front. I know it needs some stiffer springs as my mate and I set the pre-load and found I had to use the maximum setting on the rear shock. I'm around 100kg with all my riding gear on, and I think the factory must think everyone weighs about 70kg! : )
All of the tube frame Buell's I saw when looking to buy mine had clearance issue's with the side stand, the little foot part half worn off! with my side stand I have no clearance issue at all!

I may be taking my Uly to a track day on the 24th of Jan at the same track : )If the Minister of War and finance allows me....that is!; )
