I know that the Buell is truly unique in that it combines the torquey Harley Vee Twin with a sport bike. I'm just trying to find out which genes are more dominant in the whole package.

I have done a few rides with my S2 now (SoCal . . . always nice), back roads as well as canyons, and find myself putting around mostly in the 2200 to 2800 RPM range. Sure, I accelerate out of corners but even then I usually find myself shifting up around 4000 to 4500 RPM. I don't think I've hit the redline yet. Somehow, my engine tells me it's happier in low RPMs, which makes sense since it's really a cruiser engine. On the freeway, I usually ride at 75 mph, which translates to 3300 RPM in 5th gear, and the bike glides beautifully, ignores bumps completely.

My question now is: do you experience the same, or do you ignore the engine's cruiser heritage and rev it rather high?

I should perhaps add that as of right now I'm riding with a totally open SUPERTRAPP exhaust, meaning no discs and no end cap, as this is how I bought the bike. I meanwhile was able to buy a stock muffler and eventually want to mount that one.

Run it through the gears and shift at 6800 RPM provided you have 7K module other wise just shift before you hit the REV LIMITER ...

Let us know how much better it feels then ...

Bernard, I know what you are talking about. I ride mine the same way. Until I tried to follow my brother-in-law who rode his Suzuki SV650 on the Parkway like a bat out of hell. I was constantly hitting the rev limiter and the brake got spongy too. But I kept up. Barley. I like it better between 3k and 4k though...

My S2T is stock and engine is perfectly at ease vibration less at 80 mph.125,500 miles no rebuilds and doesn,t use oil.But need Race module craps out above 5,800 rpm.

Bernard, I have a 1995 S2 with stock header, vance and hines SS2R and a Mikuni carb. I find most riding is between 2800 and 4500 with an occasional busrt to 6200 or so. The engine is smooth all the way up to redline and good to rev it up once in a while to keep everything working well.
Keep the revs up when you can and have some fun in the corners.

I generally shift at 5700 almost all the time, only because I have the stock ignition module. On my XL1200S, I had an SE 6800 ignition, and I usually shifted it at 6000.

Bernard - I would not categorize a S2 engine as a cruiser like a Harley big twin. Stock, it is more of a “standard” engine.

If it is stock, revving it above 6200 RPM will produce nothing more than noise until it bounces off the rev limiter. Unless it is modified, HP starts dropping off at that point.

That engine likes it if you keep it above 2800 RPM in the fatter part of the torque curve like a couple of the guys suggested.

I like to cruise around 4k - it scares women and children

Bernard,
As mentioned by several other folks, the stock ignition module kicks in a bunch of ignition retard at about 5500 or so. If you put a Dyna or Screamin' Beagle ignition on it (be sure to get the 7 pin one) it will be quite happy up to about 6K then fall off some. I never had any problems running mine up to 6500 on occasion when it was stock, but it was indeed happier from 4K to 6K.

Bernard – If you are still monitoring this, I would like to help make something crystal clear for you, stick to the rev range of 2800 – 4500 with the burst when wanted to 6000.

For anyone that thinks differently…

A S2 with stock heads, cams, and exhaust will not make any more horsepower if revved over 6200rpm regardless of what ignition is used and the rev limit. This is an undisputable fact!

If you went out and bought any aftermarket ignition available (for a stock S2) and selected any ignition curve it had to offer, and then set the rev limit to 9,000 RPM, it will improve nothing above 6200RPM. Not only will it not improve anything above this threshold, but your engine will not reach 7,000 RPM because not only has your horsepower now dropped to the equivalent of your 5,400RPM numbers; The cam has long run out of ump, the valves are floating, The CV carb slide is starting to drop due to lower engine vacuum, and the exhaust is as effective as a cork. This refers to my statement that it will just be making more noise!!! Until something breaks.

It simply does not make any difference what ignition module or rev limiter is in place. Ignition timing does not produce horsepower, it merely regulates how fast the HP curve comes in and where the engine produces the power. It will not by itself produce more top end horse power.
