Does anyone know if S3 tanks are the same ones used on the later M2s? Isn't it either the small tank - early M2/S1 or a larger manta tank until you get to the X1?

I want to pick up another tank for my M2, refit it with a Pingel fuel valve and repaint it (if it's not already blue.)
I have a nice scrape on the side of my tank thanks to the previous owner that I'd like to remedy but I don't want to be without the bike longer than I have to since I'm not sure how long it will take me to make those changes and paint it. Plus, I'm going to slowly add to my parts collection.

I've got a later style 5 gallon M2 tank with a Pingle Fuel valve if you want to buy it.

Looks like the point is moot now but I'm running a '98 S3 tank on my M2, it was easier to get an older tank from a carb'd bike than try and make an adapter for the petcock.

Increased my fuel capacity by a whopping 1/2 gallon or so, but I really don't like having to stop for gas on longer trips so it was worth it to me.

No, it's not moot. I saw a couple of different year S3 tanks and from the bottom they look like they were out of different molds. The impressions on the bottom were different and I didn't know if they were created to fit tightly over different obstructions unique to one bike versus the other.

All the s3 tanks will fit but the 99 has a fuel pump, so you need to fit a petcock.

The 99+ is drilled differently (for a petcock) and has a different cast shape underneath (due to the pump Mick mentioned). So while fitment is not a problem, compatibility is. I bought a scratched 2001 S3 tank (ebay) and then realized my error, so polished it up and put it back on ebay.

I'm uncertain if the S3 and S3T have different capacities, the one I bought was for the T model in an effort to get more miles in between fuel stops. I don't recall the S3 model production years 96 or 97 on? Anyway the casting should closely match that of the 99+ M2 Manta tank.

I was told that the material in S3 tanks was bored out a bit more to increase capacity, but otherwise it was the same as the S1W and M2 tanks.

Hopefully this helps and others can fill in the gaps on model years and such.
