I wiped out on a 1999 Lightning x-1 back in March. In the wreck, the aftermarket Forcewinder was destroyed and dirt found it's way in. I cleaned everything out, I hope, and the bike seems to have a little hesitation ever since. The bike has a "lull" in a certain throttle postion and backfires sometimes. Can someone please tell me what to do?

Check for vacuum leaks. If your a/c was destroyed, the throttle body probably took a hit and may be leaking a little. There are three gaskets, two between manifold and head and a third between the throttle body and manifold. Also check for an open vacuum fitting on the bottom of the throttle body. Plug this fitting if there is one and it's open.

Reset the TPS.

I inspected the gaskets. Everything looks to be okay. I did notice the nipple was not covered, so I plugged it. There is still hesitation. Is there a way I can adjust the tps by judging the rpm's? If so, what should the bike idle at?

Setting TPS is writing the "0" position of the sensor to the ECM. Mechanically you close the throttle all the way by backing out the idle speed screw, then electronically tell the ECM to store this "0" or null position for the TPS.

You need ECM Spy or a similar tool to do this.

After you set or zero the TPS, you adjust the idle to 1050-1100 RPM with the idle speed screw. (alternatively you can set TPS to ~ 5% with ECM Spy.)

My S3 was hesitating around 3K RPM. I replaced all three gaskets, plugged the vacuum fitting and used a spray carb cleaner to clean all the carbon out of the throttle body behind the butterfly.

When my bike is cold it still hesitates in this RPM range, but gets over it when it warms up.
