Will be fitting the cometic head gaskets to my X1, the instructions reads, final torque to 42lbs/ft,
no mention of the final 1/4 turn of torque mentioned in the x1 service manual, so is it 1/4 turn or not ?
Also got a new engine sprocket nut, it comes with a red locking compound on the threads, do i remove the red and apply loctite 620 to the threads ?,

I'd say just go for the 42 as final torque.
I think that's what you'd end with if you did it per the manual with the 1/4 turn method.

Thinking the red compound on the nut is sufficient, but you may get better advice from someone else, as I've got no experience with the pre-compounded items.

The Cometics need the torque as listed, 42 ft/lbs. Their instructions are quite explicit.Just did some on a 90" tuber.

YES 1/4 TURN AFTER TORQUE, AND TORQUE IN INCREMENTS.... DONT DO THE FULL 42 LBS FIRST SHOT. TORQUE IN PROPER SEQUENCE/ORDER TO HALF TORQUE SPEC, THEN TO FULL TORQUE SPEC, THEN YOUR 1/4 TURN. MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN AND LUBE YOUR HEAD BOLTS OR YOU WILL GET AN IMPROPER TORQUE READING!

hold on i'll tell you what the INSTRUCTIONS from cometic says that came with my top end gasket kit.

step 8. alternately nug head bolts finger tight.
step 9. in sequence tighten all head bolts to 9ft-lbs. then in sequence tighten all head bolts to 14 ft-lbs. agian in sequence tighten all head bolts to 22ft-lbs. then in sequence tighten all head bolts to 35ft-lbs and finally torque all head bolts to a final torque of 42ft-lbs in sequence.

NOTE: all other models Pan Head, Shovel Head & Iron Sportster use factory torque specs when using an MLS head gasket.

torque sequence is the same as stock

rear short, front short, rear long, front long

Interesting,
Last time I used a Cometic top end rebuild set, they specified the final 1/4 turn after the final torque.
Did they change it since then? That was about 2 years ago..

Brad, they must have as all the recent ones specify the 42 and not the 1/4 turn.

The 1/4 turn is terrabily inconsistant I would follow the cometic instructions, I did mine last spring the 1/4 turn varies wildly from 35 to 54 ft lbs ( HD gaskets )
