So my rear shock is blown on my 1996 S1. I want to know if any other factory Buell shocks that bolt right into an S1 frame. If anyone has something that fits let me know, otherwise I'll just keep checking ebay. I don't need anything fancy, just some advice or a factory shock that works!! | ||

I assume from the mileage that you have an original recall shock, which is 16 inches long, eye to eye. A later recall shock was shorter, at 14.5". To allow for the difference, the front bracket was changed. There is someone on eBay who is clearing out the newer, 14.5" versions. They tend to go for $100- $125. With that shock you will need to spend another $40 or so for the front bracket to make it work. Still a hell of a deal. For those with money, there are a number of aftermarket shocks but I gather that is not the case for you at the moment. | ||

I rebuild mine every roughly 10,500 miles (it blows around this mileage with alarming regularity). It is rebuilt using Race Tech parts and works spectacularly. The first time I Gold valved it, and it is both plusher than stock, working better on small bumps, and resists bottoming much better, being able to soak up big hits. The difference between stock and modified at the track is night and day. If the aftermarket shocks work better, I'm probably not good enough to notice. Make sure the right weight shock fluid is used, as I used an improper weight in a Screaming Eagle fluid that was supposed to be an equivalent. That did not work well, and was dealt with until the next time it blew. For comparison, I jumped a Hypermotard over a railroad crossing my Buell handles easily (the forks have been re-sprung and also Gold valved). The Hyper landed so hard I was sore for a day, where the S1 handles the same with no such drama. They only have parts for the long Showa. | ||

i checked with a buell dealer in my state. and they said my 96 s1 had 3 recall items that had'nt been done. and would order the parts. and that i could bring it in and they would install them no charge. this was 2 weeks ago. one of the items was the shock and mounts. not bad for a bike that allmost 14 years old | ||

If you have the WP shock on it, you may want to reconsider that one. The only issue that shock had is that the bolts break if they are not tightened precisely the same. Take off WP's were, for some time, selling for a premium on Ebay. |
