I hit the starter and it just clicks sometimes and other times it starts. It's failing to start more and more. Sometimes I just persistently hit the starter button over and over and it eventually fires. Other times I remove the relay block and move them around. I switch them or just re-seat them and it starts. I've used contact cleaners with no success. I've jiggled the relay block wires with no success. It's really a mystery and I can't rely on it if I'm on any kind of schedule. This happened to me a couple of months ago and the problem seems to have gone away for quite some time. Now it’s back. I've checked the battery cables and they are tight. I've gotta put in some time and trouble shoot to figure this out. I've also sprayed contact cleaner in the switch gear and ignition switch.

Jim, did you check the battery voltage? Needs to be over 12.5... even 12.8 I think. Anything less and it's toast.
Mine was click , clicking and sometimes starting. I thought it was the starter, the battery was showing that it was fully charged, but it just wasn't enough.
Got a new battery and my problem was thankfully as simple as that.
Batteries, even a year old can be junk if they aren't trickled when not in use.

Jim; check the little one-wire Molex connector coming off the starter. Mine was coming unplugged and gave me fits for weeks being intermittent. Reseated and Presto! Perfect.
Also, next time it acts up, pull in the clutch and try starting. This will bypass the sidestand switch.

Well, its not intermittent anymore. Too bad I've been called to work today. I should have had the time to troubleshoot today. I still have not been able to try everyone's suggestions. Now I have a lot more incentive.

I got it running today. I replaced both Ignition relays. It idles better, runs smoother, and warms up quicker. Took me five Auto parts stores to finally get two new relays.

12V relay - Duralast part# 19389, $8.99 each.

Take a look at the grounding strap between the frame and the swingarm. Mine was rusty at the frame and caused the same problem for almost 2 years till I finally figured it out. It would cause the battery not to charge, a bad connection for the starter, all sorts of bad things. There is a small washer in there, I replaced mine with a stainless piece and have not had a problem since. Easy 59 cent fix!
