I'm getting down to the last few pieces before I have everything apart for powdercoat. I have the top triple tree off of the steering head shaft. How does the bottom one come off? Is it just fed through the hole by a press fit? If that's a yes, an arbor press was my next step. This is the first time I've ever torn down a bike completely so a lot of this stuff is new to me.

Does the bike have a lock in the neck of the frame??? Make sure it is not holding it in.

It should drop out. If it is a X1 I am not sure...

Buell steering stems appear to be a press fit in the lower tree.

I myself would just mask off the stem.

Oh, I miss read the post. I would not remove the lower tree from the shaft but it can be done, and yes, they are pressed in.

Thanks Jramsey, I am an idiot.

You can heat the lower tripple clamp with a propane torch and the shaft will drop out
no press

There is a C Clip at the bottom, remove that first.

IIRC, you dont need to remove the c-clip, because the stem gets pressed out in that direction.
