Took the bike out today for a ride,It started fine on choke but had what I call the hiccups typical with some Harleys I've rode cold,I drove about 2 miles into town and cruising around 30mph it would hiccup every so often,I'm sure it was warmed up.I got on open highway and it rode fine but it does it warm at slow speeds even after a hour of riding but it is intermittent.I drained the carb bowl,actually all the gas from the tank and put in fresh 93 but didn't have a chance to try it.I may pull the carb and clean it or it may clear up on its own | ||

did you change the intake and exhaust and compensate for the jetting etc.?? and does the hiccup ever become a pop out the carb? I'm still fiddling with mine. Opened up is great, slow speed is a bit spotty. | ||

It's still bone stock with pretty low miles,just turned 1,300,it seems carburetor related but not sure,cruising 55 is fine as well as wot.I found this link on a review on a 99 X1 http://www.powersportsnetwork.com/enthusiasts/revi ew_detail.asp?rv=26178&veh=420 This guy speaks about the under 15mph lunge which I have going slow in town and I feel like it's normal for the bike,I've also read about this elsewhere.My dads Harley did the same intermittent pops or "hiccups" cold for just a mile or so and then it was fine.As far as the stock airbox on the M2,should I be able to see the air filter looking in from the tank side? | ||

They were jetted lean from the factory, rejetting will cure your problem. I get a carb backfire every blue moon after reworking my carb, although my bike isnt flowing like a stock bike anymore. I think your right about it being lean,I was reading another thread http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=3842&post=316893 speaking about surging at low speeds,what jet size do you recommend on a stock bike,still waiting on my manual so I don't know the stock jet sizes | ||

stock i would think a 45, and a 190-195 main would be ok, make sure you also shim the needle, that should cure the hiccups. Stock it should have the 42 slow in there, which is too lean. | ||

Would that help the slow speed lunging below the 15 mph mark or would that just be a Buell in general seeing it is common even in some reviews | ||

This is your typical "Keihin Cough"...caused by a lean factory setting. Remove the plug (if present) over the idle mixture screw and back it out a half-turn at a time. You may end up having to go up one size on the pilot jet, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it... | ||

What Captn Kirk said.. Yes, the lean jetting will cause the surging at low speeds. Put in a 190 main, a 45 pilot and start with 2 1/2 turns out on the low speed screw. The needle can also be shimmed about .050" You can get shim washers at a hobby store, they have them as spacer washers for RC cars axels and motors. This is the cheapest and best thing you can do for ridability on you M2. It makes a WORLD of difference. | ||

The best thing you can do for an M2 (IMHO) is chuck your CV40 in the gravel and hang an HSR-42 on there. The difference is night & day...and instantaneous. Like Aaron W. said once in the KV....." (it's)like having a direct connection between your right wrist and the rear wheel..." No truer words have been spoken(recently). | ||

Ok Guys,my intake seal set come in today but before I install I need some more advice.Richsm2 was right,my front breather bolt was loose so it may have contributed to the sneezing/hiccup/caugh ect... I pulled the bowl and everything looked clean,including the jets,the slow jet is still stock as well as the main.I drilled out the plug to access the mixture screw and backed it out 2 1/2 turns,factory was roughly 1 3/4 turns.Should I go ahead and install the 45 slow jet while everything is still apart or try the mixture adjustment first? My bike is still stock other than a K&N in the stock airbox (Message edited by scdobber on November 11, 2009) | ||

Ok,I went ahead and installed the 45 slow jet, 2 1/2 on mixture,new seals ect..The weather is pretty cool 50's.The bike started faster than usual with only half choke.It seems to idle smoother "alot less tank shake" Took it for a short ride only a mile due to rain and it seemed to do ok,no cough so far (Message edited by scdobber on November 11, 2009) |
