So my speedo drive on my 97 S1 died. I picked one up yesterday and plan on changing it tonight. I intend on using a front end stand that fits into the "cups" on the bottom of the forks. However, while looking at the bike last night, I started to wonder if that will work when I remove the "clincher" bolts. Will the fork spread? will the cups fall out?

Do you guys think I'll have any problems.

I don't have the stand HD/Buell recommends in the manual. Just a generic one.

You will be fine with that stand.

Keep in mind the first thing is to remove your brake pads from the calipers, then the caliper from the fork mount.

Zip tie caliper up out of the way. Loosen axle, then pinch bolts.

If you've got cast wheels, you'll have to find that one solitary sweet spot where the caliper can squeeze out from between the wheel and rotor. That spot DOES exist, so don't try to force the caliper through a tight spot.

If you've got PM wheels, there's a bit more space and removing the caliper is a breeze.

i have been removing the screws attaching the disc carrier from the hub to make it real easy to remove the front wheel. if you are only changing the speedo drive there is no need to remove the brake caliper. remove axle, let wheel drop down a bit and slide old speedo drive out and new speedo drive in. reassemble. i would grease the speedo drive with some light grease before installation. NOT THE CABLE!
have fun.

Good feedback. Installation went great. Now I actually know my speed instead of using RPMs. (but we all know speed doesn't really matter....)

And Smoke, I went with anti-seize on the speedo drive and axle....after cleaning everything real well.
