I ride a '99 M2. I just put an aftermarket air cleaner on and replaced the manifold seals while I was there. Then went for a ride. It ran ok but was pinging some on takeoff so I put some 93 octane in and rode some more. Still pinging under high-load conditions so I headed home. Before I got home bike started choking and coughing and lost all kinds of power. Put it in the truck.
When I got home aNd took the tank off I found that I forgot to plug in the V.O.E.S. Could this be the problem and could I have damaged the motor?

How long did you run it while it was pinging? If it was just a short ride with some light pinging, I doubt you hurt the motor.

Well, the bad thing was I was in heavy stop a go city traffic. It was maybe an hour before it started acting up.

You changed the intake seals?

I'd go back and doublecheck the integrity of the new seals with some WD40. If you've got a leak, it'll run lean and that'll make it ping.

If the VOES was unplugged from the vacuum fitting and the fitting was open, then there was an air leak which will make it run lean and ping.

Before I can do that I have to see why it is running soo bad now. Like I said it started running rough and lost a bunch of power and is backfiring out the exhaust. When I plugged the V.O.E.S. It seemed to smooth out a little but still backfired.

Oh and it wasn't unplugged from the hose. The wire connection was unplugged.

Backfiring out of the exhaust could come from a bunch of different things. Weak battery will do it--so will a stuck or burned exhaust valve.

How old is your battery? Any other electrical stuff acting funny, like tach needle bouncing around, starter cranking slow, headlight dim, etc? You might sniff the fluid in your primary to see if your stator has burned out--that'd let your battery go down pretty fast. Check your grounds.

Have you got a compression tester?

edit to add another thought: Is your sidestand safety switch still intact? They're known to go bad and cause similar problems.

I just put a new battery in last month. Turns over normally with no dimming of headlight. I don't have a tach so no help there. The side stand switch is still in tact so that's where I'll start. Can I just unhook it or do I need to put the wires together to make a circuit?

Edit: the sidestand had already been bypassed by jumping the 2 wires together.
Seems like it's only running on one cylinder most of the time. Will keep trying to find a loose connection.

OK, got it. When the VOES is electrically disconnected, the ignition is going to be running in the retarded advance curve. Running the bike that way can result in overheating and may have fouled the spark plugs.

Try changing spark plugs and verify the VOES is properly connected and functioning.

OK, you're making progress, now. Start with the easy-to-check stuff and go progressively deeper until you solve the problem.

There's a safety switch on the clutch, too, I think. Based on what I read here, they don't go out as often as the sidestand switch, but it's something else to look at.

Ignition switches have been known to go bad, causing intermittent electrical drop-out. If your ignition key is kind of wobbly in the hole, it's probably worth changing the switch out--Al at American Sport Bike has generic replacements cheap.

+1 to what Sparky said--if it's something electrical, I'm gonna listen to anything that comes from a guy named "Sparky"!

Another thought--the timing cup sometimes comes apart on these motors. It's under the round inspection plate on the cam cover; you also have to remove part of the ignition to get at it, which will disturb the timing, so this is something to check if all the easy(er) stuff checks out.

Please don't be offended by my next question--it's not a slap at your mechanical ability--but is there anything else on the bike that you touched before the problem arose? In my own experience, that last things I mess with are often the next things to cause problems.

Hang in there. You'll get it fixed.

Just got home from my "got it fixed" ride! Sparky hit it on the head. It was the plugs: ) I put in the old HD plugs, made sure VOES was plugged in, and ran smooth with no ping.
Only thing that stinks is those plugs that got messed up were brand new NGK DCPR8EIX Iridium plugs. Any way to clean them up and use them again?

Thank you all for the help. As you can tell I'm no mechanic but I like to learn to do this stuff myself so thanks again.
