hey guys... im going to strip my S1 down to nothing this winter and build it back from the ground up... here are some things i have in mind and here is what it has so far: -re powder coat the frame -anything else steel to match -new paint on plastics -integrated led rear tail -led blinkers up front -CF rear fender engine is going to remain stock size for the build, but im thinking about an ignition upgrade, and im going XB heads im pretty sure, same size, more flow  what it has now: -rejet -race plugs -XB forks/wheels/brakes i'd like to swap out the handle bar setup, im a newb so i dont know all the terminology, but its got what apears to be clipons but their built into the triple tree... i hate the riding position, it kills my back after about 30 min... i'd like to raise the bars at least about 2-3" and use some standard 7/8" bars but im so new to the bike i dont know what all is out there that i can buy or mod to it... can anyone give me some ideas? | ||

I am doing a removable aluminum tube subframe, X1 forks, dual disk brakes, fiberglass & foam seat, ignition, XB rockerbox covers and breathers, and increase compression. | ||

i would say you probably have firebolt upper triples, i think you could switch out to the xb lightning triples and get regular bars again | ||

Looks like a fun project. Make sure you start a thread so we can see your progress and maybe get inspired. I had a set of handle bars on my S1W when I got it that were not stock (a little wider) then I went to stock and then to bars like yours. I had more control of the bike with those wider bars (about the same height as stock). I liked them the best. Do not forget to do the common stuff like isolators, bearings and races, brake pads and cables etc. Frank | ||

i did some google searching... seems like the xb rear swing arm is a popular mod too... is it plug and play or is there modifications needed? it holds oil right? so can i ditch the stock oil tank under the seat? | ||

The hard part would be changing from an underslung pull shock to a conventional shock attached on top of the swingarm. | ||

Aluminum oil tank with stainless braided lines. Penske Shock. Cut cam case cover. 1250 kit. Oh wait, I'm doing all that, and then some. But there are some ideas. Edit: XB swingarm on a tuber is NOT a popular mod. It's been done one time that I've seen, and that is by a fellow named Jodie aka Joesbuell. You need to fabricate a custom swingarm mounting block and shock mount area. If you have the time, know how and patience, then do it. (Message edited by brinnutz on October 07, 2009) | ||

You may want to look up a guy on here LakeBueller. He did a total rebuild on his S1W like you are talking about. I am sure he has some good tips to offer on the powdercoating and some other stuff. | ||

Ricky, that is a '99-'02 swingarm. I have one if you decide you want one. The header on the earlier bike is a '99-'02 header and will not fit the earlier tubers unless you dent in the rear headpipe. | ||

would it be better to dent the pipe, or notch the frame during the rebuild... i already have one spot on the frame i have to fix from it being dropped... does that swing arm also double as an oil reservoir? | ||

4ork.. the swingarm on the blue M2 you posted does not contain oil. It is hollow, and a few have discussed trying to modify one to double as the oil tank but that would take plenty of modification. You'd end up adding a lot of unsprung weight to the rear end and with very few benefits. Besides, if you modify an aluminum tuber swingarm to hold oil, then you no longer need an oil tank, which is what is in the way to begin with and is such a problem when figuring out where to attach the conventional shock when using an XB swingarm  As for the frame, I've asked myself the same question before so I'll give you my (PERSONAL) first two choices. #1 - ideally, the frame should never be cut, welded, modified in any way. So just stick with a 99-02 header in any tuber with a stepped frame, and a pre-99 header in the straight framed bikes. #2 - if you must modify the frame because you can't live without the header of your choice, the frame could be taken to a TIG (not MIG) welder than is very experienced and whose work can be trusted (literally with your life) FYI.. just so you're clear on the terminology, "stepped frame" is referring to the lower portion of the steel tube frame on the right side of the bike which spans from under the air filter back to the right side of the battery. AFAIK all 99 and later bikes had a "step" or bend in this part of the frame and a header which is routed UNDER the step which locates the hot rear header pipe further from the rider's leg. The 98 and older bikes all had a straight tube here and used a header which is routed OVER the frame. | ||

i dont know ive just been googling buell s1 for ideas of mods  wish i knew more about them lol. im going to do a custom dash like phelan is doing since we both have XB wheels and have no speedos im still going to look at how hard it is to switch cases/transmissions to a newer style with the elec. speedo... | ||

You should look for an XB9/12S, XB12X, or XB9/12SX top tree to swap out, then you can run tubular bars again. Thing is they're particular on year. You need to find out what year XB your firebolt front end came off of so you know which top tree to get. If you can't find out, find someone with a pair of dial calipers to measure the diameter of the holes for the fork tubes and list it, so we can help you find the year. | ||

im pretty sure it was 03 or 04... but i can measure them i guess... i'd REALLY like to do the firebolt everything... bars, gauge cluster... having the fairing and headlight setup would be cool... not sure how it would look on a tuber tho | ||

It'd look cool, but you'd have a he'll of a time trying to get the XB gauges to work. The tach signal comes from the ECM, which is non-existent in the carbed S1. BTW, Firebolts have frame-mounted fairings. The model you're talking about (the one I pictured) is a Lightning. The lightning headlights would actually be a fairly simple swap (and has been done before). What I think would look cooler though, is an 1125CR headlight swap, which is also fairly simple, and done at least once (BilletMetallic on this board put one on his S1). | ||

I've ridden both 1125 models and while they're a lot of fun, I'd never trade a tuber for one. I'll have an XB framed bike some time in the (hopefully) near future, but it's gonna have pushrods. Now if I garage space and account balances weren't an issue, I'd love to have an 1125R as a track bike.. | ||
