Well i am going with a whole new tranny and was wanting some opinions. I called zippers and asked about The tranny options and (pat) said not to go with a 6 speed saying they are prone to false neutrals and baker does not stand behind there products!

I called baker and they said the warranty is 5yr 50k mile.

I like the fact that the zippers tranny's are already back cut but the baker is much cheaper $700 less!

What do you guys know about the trannys and these manufacturers

Baker is better, and Dan can backcut the tranny for $260. Plus the 6 speed is fine.

I have the Baker 5 speed which I LOVE! Buell should have put these in as OEM. My bike shifts better than my dirt bikes now! Did I say I'm really impressed - by far the best performance investment I've made.

I don't see a need for the 6 speed tranny myself - unless you have ruined the torque curve of your bike where you need to keep the motor spinning too high. ; ) If you're racing, a 6 speed is handy, but for the street & touring - I don't see the need.

If you do a search on the internet you can find a place that has excellent pricing on them. They are not sponsors here so I don't want to just throw a name out on this forum without giving the supportors a first shot. Don't bother with a PM either - just do your own research please.

I'm always looking for anotheer gear at 85 or 90. Go with the six speed. Wish I had one.

Oh, and I talked to a guy at Zippers. He said you don't need back cut gears for the street. If you got the money, do it, but it's not worth it unless you're racing he said.

Opinions all, but I wouldn't get a new tranny WITHOUT back cut gears.

Do you "need" it? No - but if you want your tranny to "snick" into gear with just a flutter of the clutch lever, then back cut gears are the way to go.

I'd rather have back cut gears than an extra gear. I normally don't travel faster than 80 mph on the freeway and on the track I really don't care about my "cruising rpm" ; )

If you do long interstate slabs at high speed then a 6 speed may be a better choice. So - it really comes down to how YOU will be using the bike...

LOl zippers is selling the baker six speed cheaper than baker is selling it!

Pat at zippers said they refuse to back any baker tranny!

I've run into that many times. If the OEM would be allowed to sell parts cheaper then there would be no reason for a shop to be a distributer. Of course, Zippers may be trying to clear out their inventory as well...

When I bought my Baker transmission it was a custom gear ratio order shipped directly from Baker - not anything they had pre-assembled on the shelf. And it was MUCH cheaper than the Baker price - again, the distributer can play with their profit margin. Kind of like MSRP vs. the price the dealer will negotiate down in order to meet their sales goals.

I'm sure you'll be happy with any performance transmission. Anything better than a stock Sporster tranny will make you smile...

Even though there are times when I'd like the tranny to shift smoother or run at lower RPM at highway speed, I can't justify spending this kind of money on a transmission.

I spent less buying Betty than one of these transmissions costs..

I have a baker 6 that I had in a street bike, then in a drag bike and now in my land speed bike. Am I 100% happy with it? No. But Baker has stood behind it and helped me with some of the problems I have had with it.

It is a good transmission, but not perfect.

I an effort to save some money i am having zippers beef up the old tranny for track racing next year. They said worst case is 1k for full tranny replacement with billet trap door and back cutting and all the trimmings.

The salt lake HD recommended R&d motorsports also. but the phone was busy all day and could not reach them. I like the idea of back cut gears and a stronger trap door.

Pammy is right...I had R&D do a trans for one of my older bikes...when I got it back, it looked so pretty I didn't want to hide it inside my engine...I put hundreds of passes on the transmission with no failures...it was still in the motor when I sold the bike...(and so was the head that Wes built for me..)

Pssssst... Pammy...that old KZ740 motor is somewhere in Georgia with a big old nitrous kit...kickin some street racing butt...

I have a R&D tranny in a "old" 88inch ( 116 HP ) four speed XL, it shifts like butter, they do great work down there............Now I gotta get the heads redone by Wes and Pammy......

If Pammy tells you something, you can take it to the "BANK" that it is 100% right !!!

IMHO, a CLOSE RATIO 6 Speed is the answer ...

As much as the BAKER 6 SPEED is, it should come with the gears cut for shifting ...

PLUS your shifter assembly must be set up perfectly, so the last link in the chain, meaning you foot can make it work ...

REMEMBER THIS: If you shift foot is not up to the task, a big dollar transmission will be of no help ...

One thing I forgot, Mark down at R&D motorsports told me that the Baker six speed for XL's does need a little tweaking to be up to his standards.....
