Hello Badwebers,

It has been a long time since I've graced the badweb forums with any piece of Buell lore. About a year and a half ago, I undertook a big project, basically doing a complete tear down on my 97 M2, with the intention of doing a lot of polishing, painting, and some in depth maintenance. The winters are long here in Wisconsin, so I had no problem with the idea of really tearing down the bike and doing everything very thoroughly.

I did a lot of the work at home in a back room, as I don't have a garage at my place. The rest of it was done at my dad's auto garage about 20 minutes away. This being the case, I was almost constantly hauling boxes of parts of all sorts. Body panels, engine parts, I even took the cam cover off and was polishing that and replacing the gasket and such.

Of course, when hauling some of the most crucial parts, I was in my first automobile accident ever, and it was a hell of an accident. I rolled my V8 Ford Explorer five times and the crash investigator even thinks I endo'd it once. Needless to say I was speeding. Seatbelt on, I walked away with basically no injuries.

Luckily, I had just taken out the engine, swingarm, and rear wheel section days earlier, or I would be typing headless right now.

The Buell however didn't fair so well, and I lost a lot of the parts in the snowy field I crashed in. At this point, the motorcycle wasn't much of a priority, so I took all the parts I had, the frame, and the engine, and put them into storage. I was able to find the cam cover, but I didnt have the hardware to put it back on and I really didn't feel like even looking at it for a while. I wrapped up the engine the bast I could and put it up in our family's barn.

Fast forward to today. I picked up an older Ninja this past summer, and that got me wanting to get the M2 cruising again. I picked up all my parts earlier this week and I'm starting the rebuild.

My predicament: I'm missing some parts. So far, I know I'm missing the hardware for the cam cover, and one cam gear. The engine didn't stay wrapped all that well, so I'm going to need to completely go through it and make sure it is clean of any stray debris. This is all I noticed at first glance, but I know I will run into more problems as the build continues.

I don't know what I'm going to do about the cam gear problem, I'm guessing that I'll be better off buying a whole new cam set. Do these sets usually come with the gears as well? Also, where is a good place to find the hardware for the cover? I'd like to avoid dealer's if at all possible for the sake of $. Also, any tips on how to be SURE my internals are free of debris? If the cam side of the motor was partially exposed for a while, what are some things I'm especially going to need to look out for?

I know a guy, who knows a Harley tech, who will help me out for a cheap price, but I'd really rather tackle this by myself as much as possible. It's my mess and I would really like to make the best of it and at least learn as much as possible.

Any input or advice is much appreciated. I'm sure I'll get flamed for not taking more care in storing my parts, but after having that close of a brush with disaster, it was fairly low on my priority list, and I really just didn't have enough "give a shit" to do everything properly.

Thanks all, look forward to rejoining the American Sport V-Twin world.

Axl, the cams and gears are one piece except for the driving gear its self.

there are basicaly 2 gear profiles, the newer ones IIRC are less fussy about fitting in the timing case, they do not interchange, I forget the names now,

so the 4 cams and a matching pinion and you are goood to go.

have you checked to see if you can get that one cam? the screws you can check with American Sport Bike as they used to sell fastener kits and can sell you high quality bolts

Start surfing the classifieds, seems like there's been a few cam's sets for sale over the last few months.

Al at A.S.B. is always a good source for parts.

Good luck and welcome back!

Those are stock Sportster cams. They are paper-weights. I have a couple of sets you could have for shipping.

I will have a set of S1W cams with around 8,800 miles on them when I get my bike back.

Thanks guys. I ordered parts from American Sport Bike a couple years ago, but when you're out of the game for a little while, those are the kind of sources a guy forgets about.

As far as the cams and other parts go, I've got a Harley tech, friend of a friend, that's going to come over and let me have his opinion on what should stay and what should go. I'm just really concerned that any stray corrosion or anything could render this project a paperweight after I get it all back together.

I'll keep everyone updated on the build

According to the '95 S2 parts catalog you need:
Qty 3 3480A Screw, 1/4-20 x 1-3/4 knurled socked hd. (Grade 8 steel)
Qty 1 4740A Screw, 1/4-20 x 1-1/4 knurled socked hd. w/lockpatch and lockwasher(Grade 8 steel)
Qty 5 4717A Screw, 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 w/lockpatch
Qty 2 4820A Screw, 1/4-20 x 2 hex socket

I don't remember any lockwashers or lockpatches on mine, but that might explain why mine didn't fit when I installed in the order the book listed them. I don't know why some would be Grade 8 and some wouldn't be, I think I'd get all grade 8 to be safe. Last, but not least, what's a lockpatch?
