I'm looking for some opinions on what the best protection for carbon fiber may be. I have acquired several pieces from different places/people. None of this was bought new, and some pieces are in better condition than others. The tank trim and air cleaner cover are in the best shape, still having a clear coat looking finish(shiny). The pulley cover and belt guards are fair. The undertail is the least preserved piece I have. It just don't have that shiny look like the other pieces.

So,... is there a product out there that works well on carbon fiber?

Thanks,
Matt

When you find out let me know. I've been looking for years and nothing really works. I ride my bike and sometimes it sits out in the sun, you just have to grin and bear it. My tank cover has turned a nice shade of mossy green and is rough to the touch but I'm not going to spend $300 to replace it. So far I've got all the pieces that came stock on it, derby cover, under tail piece, both belt covers, and a timing cover and looking to get the dash sometime but still can't keep it shiny forever.

Can you get it clear coated again?

Why not spray it yourself with some clear? I'd 1000 grit sand it, clean, spray clearcoat, 2000 sand, buff, zymöl wax. Haven't had a chance to do it to mine yet, but that's how I'd do it. I've also heard that mothers metal polish will clean up the Carbon. I haven't tried it yet either though.

Speaking of metal polish reminds me. Be careful if ever working with electronics around carbon fiber pieces because it will ground out. Don't ask how I found out but CF will carry a current. Or vise versa.

I have a tank belt guard, front fender, undertail, rear hugger fender, clutch inspection cover, timing cover, both belt guards and air cleaner cover on my M2. The finish has held up except for when I tried a wheel cleaner one time. The stuff turned the lower belt guard a cloudy grey from the chemicals in the spray. I ended up using a standard rubbing compound and then a simple paste wax and it looked good again. I'd suggest a low abrasion rubbing compound and then a good wax and see how it does for you.

Safe ride,
