01 X1, The other morning I was takin a ride and was cruising around 60 when from nowhere I felt a high frequency vibration mostly in my feet and alittle in the saddle. It doesn't seem to favor any particular speed or RPM. It just kind of comes and goes. I'm almost 100% positive I've never felt it before. I will be checking as many bearings as I can find this weekend but I was just curious with the Plethura of Knowledge here if anyone has had this feeling before and what it led to. I appreciate any help and advice.

Check your exhaust mounts for loose or broken pieces.

Check the rear exhaust head pipe for rub marks were it runs under the frame tube,if its been making contact the rear Iso's are toast.

I payed closer attention and the vibration seems to come in around 3k rpms at a high frequency and the higher the rpm the lower the frequency. Then the vibration is spread more throughout the bike. This is all wonderful and at a great time in my life I'm probly about to get laid off after 10yrs of service, they cut my hours, my first child (son) is due tomorrow and the bike of my dreams is giving me trouble again.

Ah but I still have faith in God!


Thanks for the advice and any further help. When the bike cools off from the ride home I'll give er' the goin over.

My rear header barely rubs in that same spot.

I've got brand new rear isos w/ under 6000 miles on them and no vibrations

Well then I'm at a lose. I looked at the isos' and they appear to be in good shape. No tears or anything out of the ordinary. The tube and the header show decent wear on them from contact. The bike is an 01 but it only has 8k n change on it. Exhaust is still hot so I can't grab n pull yet. Thanks to hot humid Fl. weather. As soon as I can grab it I will check for any brakes or loosened clamps. Please keep the hints comin anything helps.

My rears were shot and weren't torn externally, but you won't typically see any tears on the outside of them.

If your pegs vibrate like hell like you say they do then it's the iso's.

For an 01 x1 What are the parts I should get and what else should i replace while I have it apart.

I've been trying to look in the KV but I'm about to throw my computer cause I keep having to log in every time I backout of a post.

Also if there is any other opinions on the culprit of my vibrations Please chim in.

Is there any other reason the rear head pipe is contacting the frame.

Oldironside, call Al at American Sport Bike for the rear Iso's.
Last spring I ordered 2 sets for $42.00 a set.

Easy change on the X1 with the removable side plate.

BTW congrats on the new addition to the family!

Excuse my ignorance, but the plate your referring to is that the plate where the rear peg frame mounts to. Also that plate is only present on the right side of the bike correct.

Why does the plate version help in the repair? Does it negate the spreader tool that needs to be bought or fabed!

Removable rt. side plate = no frame spreading bs to change belt or Iso's.

While your that close check the swingarm bearings they probably need greased.

I just had the same thing happen to me, it
was the rear ISO's. The rear pipe was hitting the frame hard when i banked right. I changed the rear ISO's now i have i/4 inch clearance.

An easy way to check this without surgury:
Grab the rear tail and lift.
If you see the tube frame move AT ALL relative to the isolators' central bolt, they are toast.

When mine went, the Mechanic did this test to see.

Mine had no visible damage while in the bike but once finally removed, they were noticeably sagging and separating from the metal backing plate.

Natexlh1000,

Thanks for the input. I couldnt pick up on the tire and look at the same time so I just straddled the bike and gently sat down on it and put my finger at the 12 o'clock position on the torx bolt and could feel it moving, it would pinch my finger against the side plate. I did the same thing (sitting down) with my finger against the header and frame tube with the same result it would pinch my finger.

Just Homey rigged the garage ceiling to be able to lift the bike. So whenever my son decides to join this jacked up world we live in. I will be taking the first week or so off to help the wife with the new born (aka work on the bike time between feedings and diapers). Then I can get the bike fixed cause probly by 10 or 11 mnths old my boy will be ready for his solo ride! Thanks all for the help.

Well I replaced the rear isos' to no avail on curing my vibration in the pegs. It did only take me about an hour and a half not a bad job at all. I'm curious as to if it could be the front mount or I guess I will have to check the exhaust sys again to make double sure there is nothing going on. Any other advice is appreciated. thanks

When I get home from work I'm gonna do my best to go over the whole exhaust sys. I have to be overlooking something. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) I need to replace the exhaust gaskets any way so there's no time like the present.

When mine vibrates like that, I most likely have a cracked mounting tab on my D&D mid pipe. D&D send me a new mid-pipe that has double the thickness mounting tab. If that one cracks I've got trouble!
