Hello, I found a like new(less than 1000 miles) bike at a dealer and was wondering what a good offer to make on it is. They are asking$7999, but Kelly blue book is around $4500. Any other stuff I should worry about on a bike that's been sitting around for a while? Have them clean the carbs? New tires? This'll be my first tuber thanks ben | ||

$7999................ Are you serious!? $4500 is still too much. Look in the classifieds. You can find them all day long for around $3K! | ||

You may not "have to" replace anything but you will want to replace 7 year old tires, most of the rubber items fuel hose etc, obviously change the fluids and the rest depends a lot on how the bike was stored, did somebody follow the usual recommendations for long term storage etc. Sometimes buying a new/old bike can be an expensive headache. I bought a killer deal 6 year old leftover jap bike once that required all of the above changes and more. Good luck with it. Kaput | ||

Wow, thats about a grand less then I paid for my 2000 in 01. I would say thats not worth it.0 miles btw. I agree, the bike hasent seen the updates, could be a pain in the butt. (Message edited by Cyclone00 on September 13, 2009) | ||

I bought a 01 with 500 miles on it lastyear. I got a good year of riding then the base gasket went at 2.5k requiring pretty much a rebuild. Now she runs like a champ with 5k on her.... | ||

oh yea, I paid 3K for my 01 M2...Great deal, but have since paid the real price dealing with the gasket issues..So I'd say I came out pretty even... | ||

Okay, well I think I found a 2002 local with less than 3k on the clock. After reading a bunch of the 'problem' areas of these bikes, the only one that I really don't like the sound of is the isolators going bad. It seems like this is an unavoidable problem(at some point). Is it THE problem or is it just internet chatter. thanks ben | ||

Iso's can be a pain to fix and the shop manual instructions have been questioned, as in doing it their way might cause problems with your front motor mount or mounting bolts. There are several alternative ways on the internet. Basically if you are a do-it-youselfer with some experience you'll be okay, have a buddy along for the company and extra set of eyes/hands if you do need help. THE problem? huh, I thought that was all the paper gaskets from the factory, and the old style shift linkage, you'll have the right linkage on an '02. Once the rocker box gaskets are replaced with either the new HD or some other higher quality part they are much less problematic. Many vehicles need motor mounts replaced after a certain number of years service. Some threads seem to become more common over the years as bikes reach a certain stage in their service life... Rear shocks are another problem you will eventually have to deal with. Once the seals go, will you upgrade or find someone who can rebuild? Anyway, glad you have continued to look for one of these rewarding motorcycles, hopefully the one you've got your eye on now will be the one for you. -Mike |
