with a lot of the threads in some sections of this site turning negative I thought this would be fun.

We all know how special the S2 is. It represents a pivotal point in Buell history, one of many. Here is the question I would like to ask of all of you:

What brought you to purchase a S2, either new or used????

I will start. I read about the S2 while overseas. I remember seeing one with bags (S2-T) in a magazine ad and thought, wow, that is cool. The S1 caught my eye when I returned and having never saw a S2 in person I bought the S1.

I still had never saw a S2 in person until I drove 1200 miles to pickup my S2-T (number 95). The pictures do not do it justice.

I found myself starring at it late at night and knew that I bought the last bike I would ever ride.

Of course my addiction got out of hand. I now have:
95 S2 number 35
95 S2 number 304
96 S2-T number 95
96 S2-T number 240

Of course Lynn was not thrilled with me and I noticed, as I bought S2s in various stages of repair she would comment on them. Of course I could not have these bikes without her support.

Your turn....

Frank

My Bro. in law bought a 95 S2 in 96,I had a fat-boy.He low sided on an on ramp in 96,broken collerbone etc...Didnt want to be tempted to ride till he was all better.I,out of the kindness of my heart, told him I would keep the S2 till he was better. The 300mi. ride was all I needed to remember that motorcycles are supposed to be FUN!I rode that S2 all summer and put my Phat-boy for sale.Bought my S2 in Aug. 97,$9000 OTD W/2 Buell helmets and a jacket.

I got it from my brother in law a few weeks ago. He bought it from the 2nd owner who lived in Massachusetts (I am in Maine). My brother in law was going to make it into a hot rod racer but I talked him out of cutting it up as it was so clean and in such good shape. So he bought a VERY hot S1 that was an armature racer at Louden NH raceway and made it street legal, barely.

I have been riding for 15 years and just bought an old Yamaha XT600 to run around on. I have had a KZ100R Eddie Lawson Race replica and many GPz's and stuff like that. I was not a big fan of the bike at first as I am NOT a fan of HD but I liked everything about the bike other then the engine. When he got his S1 on the road we started riding together and my XT could not even come close to keeping up with him so he talked me into trying the S2 and I was shocked that I really liked it (I wanted to hate it). I started riding it around by myself. After 2 weeks I told him I wanted it. He spent 3 days trying to talk me out of it but the more I learned about the S2's and Buell the more I liked it.

I have put about 600 miles on in the last 2 weeks so I guess I can say I really enjoy riding it. My XT on the other hand I have not ridden at all.

I would like to get an S1 at some point and do the hole "Franking Bike" thing my Brother in law has. I really like that everything is the way it is because that was the best way to do it not the cheapest. I really like that in a machine. I like that the S2's have a hand made feel to them and that they did not make may. My Eddie Lawson bike was a 1 of 1500 and I liked that very much. But that was made by a big company to make money. This was made by a small (at the time) company that just loved motorcycles. As a machinist I respect that very much. I think this bike appeals to the Machinist in me as much as the 16 year old still in there as well (I am 36 now. lol).

My S2 ('95, #1365) is my third Buell.

First, brand new in '99, was an M2. Never been on a bike before, had a good tax return, had always wanted to ride...so I bought one. 24k miles later ('02), I had to put my license on life support...so I bought an old HD police bike from the City. The FLHP got me hooked on carrying stuff without having to wear it on my back...and it helped me become a MUCH better rider. I did things with that bike that made motormen raise their eyebrows...and I rode that bike for nearly 45k miles.

The license came off life support (points cleared), and I realized how much I missed owning a Buell. So I started looking. This was...'05? '06? I have to look at my license plate to be sure...but this was when I found my S1W, with 1,100 miles on it.

I'm back!

That got me back into Buells...but I had to wear stuff on my back again. Takes a lot of fun out of it...so I started looking for my "Buell bagger". I'd always loved the S2 - more than the S3, it just spoke to me - so I focused on them. And I found my '95, close to me, with narrow bags and lowers. One ride and I was hooked.

I'm 6'4" - long and lanky. I fit the S2 (it also has the T drop pegs) perfectly. The S1W is a blast to ride...for about an hour, then I need a break. The S2? All day, no problem. I lucked into some wide bag lids on ebay in the right color, and now I have both sets.

Frank - you're not the only one who stares at your S2. I find myself doing it too. It has got to have some of the sexiest bodywork ever put on a motorcycle. I did put Thunderstorm top end bits on my bike - the base gaskets were leaking, might as well at that point LOL - but even stock it was a very satisfying bike to ride.

I still own my S1W, and have an '06 UlyX. Kim has an M2L.

The only bike that's been to Homecoming with us?

The S2.

Apparently I'm not the only one who likes to just sit...and look.

And here's the result.

I had read about Erik Buell and his bikes through various bike mags. I was fascinated with them, especially since at the time, I was into building hot rod ironhead sportsters. I considered Buells to be exotic bikes out of my reach, in a class only rich guys could afford.
In August of 1995, I was on my way back from Sturgis, to Las Cruces, NM where I lived at the time. I was on my '85 FXWG, and had had waaaay too much fun on this run. My bike had about 75,000 very hard miles on it, and was starting to have shifting problems as we passed through Colorado. By the time we got through Santa Fe, the bike was popping out of gear at 70 mph, and then slamming back into gear, for no reason at all. I knew my tranny was on it's last legs. I limped into what was then Chicks Harley, in Albuquerque, about 350 miles from home.
While waiting for the shop to get an estimate of the damages, I wandered around outside. A spectacular blue bike had caught my eye. It was a carribean candy blue S2. I was amazed at the smooth lines, the beautiful color, and that evo sportster motor hanging there just crying to be hot rodded.
Chick himself came out to tell me the bad news, it would be about 5 days turn around before my wide glide would be back on the road. He asked what I thought of the Buell, and if I'd like to take a test ride. Shiiiit! of course! I only took it around the block, but the hook was set. When I got back to the shop, Chick asked if I'd like to take the bike for a loaner while I waited for mine to get fixed. The S2 had been there in front of his shop for about 6 months, and I think I was the first person to show any interest in it.
Of course I took him up on his offer, we spread my stuff between my buddies bikes, and headed home.
Chick called me 4 days later and told me my bike was done, I told him I'd be up the next day.
When I showed up with an empty truck, he seemed a bit surprised, but smiled when he asked where his bike was. I just smiled, and told him my new bike was home safe and sound, surrounded by hondas, and sportsters.
I ended up paying just over $10,000 for that bike, and have never had any regrets.
I put 155,000 miles on that S2, before it needed to have the top end pulled.
At one point, I had 6 Buells in my garage, I'm now down to four, and my Uly is up for sale, which will leave me with three.
The S2 is truly a work of art, a two wheeled rolling marvel, eye candy for the two wheeled enthusiast.

What brought you to purchase a S2, either new or used????

Well I wanted a new one : )

When I got my license in 96 we all went on a day trip to the local H-D dealer. Now I had seen the S2 before in mags, and in fact I fell in love with Buell back in the 80s when I seen an RR in a copy of 'Easy Rider'.
Growing up in a H-D household it was good to know I could get a sport bike my dad wouldn't fully hate ; )

Well on that day trip was a brand new, left over, 95 S2. Parkway Blue with white rims.

Oh the beauty!

I musta stared at it for 1/2 hour...

Well being 16, the funds don't exists and the hell if mom or dad was going to throw down that kind of cash for a motorcycle!

Well I started to save here and there and got about 2k stashed fr my 18th b-day.
I may have had more, but grew up pretty poor on the SouthWest side of Detroit. Extra cash always went toward school and bills...

Well I took my 2k and drove on down to the Harley dealer I seen that S2 at all those years ago.

Well luck would have it that they had a used Parkway Blue with white rims there! Oh the joy!!!

Well I filled put my credit app, gave em 500 to hold her. It felt awesome putting that SOLD/HOLD tag on the hand grip!

But that feeling was not to last : (

Got a call that I did not have enough credit (go fig) and would need a co-signer. As you can imagine parents were not going for it. So I was not to have a Buell at Graduation time ; )

Fast forward to June 12th 2009 12:25pm.
I get this email in my inbox...

----------------
Internal Sale:

Minty sweet Pearl White 1995 S2 Thunderbolt, S3 Bag conversion, full race kit (heads, cams, pistons, intake, exhaust), 13k miles.

$4000 takes it.

I wonder if the wife will notice a second pearl white S2 sitting in the garage…

ARGGGGG

------------

Well the cogs start grinding and I am at work mind you.
I email back, "Whats the story?"

Come to find out that the bike's current Owner is Bruce Champion of the PA dept and before that was owned by Abe Abzinski (sorry Abe I know that is wrong : ( )

There are a ton of one off stuff on it and come with not to mention the wicked back story!

I grab the phone and TXT my wife to get on Gmail chat...

Me: Do we have an extra 4k laying around?

Her: Kinda? why?

Well I go on to explain the Sweet S2, back story, the bike I have always wanted, etc...

She was actually excited for me, she figured 4k wasn't that much for a bike I want that is this kick ass and would be something for me to ride while MJ was/is down.

So I resend an Email that hey I want, and I can pick up soon!

Well I get an email back that I am third in line. My buddy Scot has 1sties, his underling has 2nd and I have third.

Well I guess my stars were aligned cause I got the cash in hand and the others couldn;t produce or pick up at the speed I could : )

So I was planing on heading out the following weekend to pick up my now secured Pearl White S2 and as luck would have it Scot was heading back from Cleavland the Wend of that week and was going to swing by and pick me up! Now how is that for service!

So The evening of June 17th I am picked up by Scot in the O-ficial Buell van and I am swept away to East Troy!

Now we get into Scot's house about 10 or so. We grab a few beers, talk all things S2 and he shoots me a lot of 'need to know' S2 owner stuff...

Scot has the same identical Buell I do and was picking up, Pearl White, white frame and wheels. So after clearing the fridge of Heilman's Old Style Beer and Shlitz we hit the hay around 2am...

Well Scot has a large clock in his living room where I had taken up residence for the night.
So imagine Christmas Morning, your birthday and about 50 Red Bullls wrapped up into a tight a little package. Then slam a that clock ontop of it, TIC TOCK! TIC TOCK! TIC TOCK! TIC TOCK! TIC TOCK! TIC TOCK!

I thought I was going to snap!

But morning arrived and I was up at 5am ready to go!

We grabbed some coffee and off to East Troy we went.

Well Scot and Bruce had meetings till about 11 so I took Scot's Truck and did some exploring, took some pics and drove all over Hell's Half Acre awaiting my sweet reward!

I went to the grocery store, grabbed some curds to snack on and headed back to the Factory.

I met up with Scot and Bruce and we headed to his house to grab the white beauty!

We did the formalities of paper work, etc while I pawned all over her, check the tire's PSI, the oil level, got her loaded up.

We then headed back o the factory for a photo op and I was gonna take the boys to Gus' for lunch but no such luck. Meetings for the rest of the day : (

So a few snap shots and I was on my way home. A nice few hundred miles to get used to my new S2, Gwen, and an awesome tale of how I finally got MY S2!

Spidey - gorgeous bike. I'd love to know more about that muffler....black painted race can? Or is it a custom? That looks like a race header to me....

And I'm jealous. You still have your Marchesini stickers on the wheels. Keep brake cleaner off of 'em. DAMHIK.

Cheers Court, I owe you one!

It would take a novel, but the short is the more I looked at photos of the bike and the lines, the more I wanted one. This was after buying the S3T this time last year.

Thank you,

It is a One off Jack Reinhart special. It was made for the race bikes and is one of only a handful made...

I'll see if I can get the exact story on it...

Joe, that muffler on Spidey's bike was an experimental Rhinehart muffler for the race header.

I would have to write a Novel as well, so to sum it up:

I rode my sportster to Colorado for an NRHS open house. I had seen S2s online but never in person. I rode Aaron Wilson's 107 HP S2 and I was addicted. I knew then what I was trying to do with my Sportster.

I spent a year looking for one, but never too seriously until I sold my Axtell/STD/CP race top end. 15 min after it sold, I found a '95 S2 in the BadWeb classifieds with a ton of extras for $2900. Without hesitation, I dibbed it, and talked to the PO (Bennett Sebestin) on the phone for a couple hours. Three weeks later I was on a plane to Detroit, MI. Mind you I live in Amarillo.

When I arrived in Detroit, Bennett picked me up from the Airport. We went to his house where he showed me the bike and walked me through the S2 owning quirks and whatnot. I went for a quick ride around the block, and when I got back, I handed over the cash, and he signed the title over. I stayed at his house that night and left early the next morning. I rode 730 miles the first day and stopped in Columbia, MO, where I stayed the night at a fellow XLForum member's house. His name is Derek. I left his house the next morning and rode 690 miles to Weatherford, OK, where I stayed a couple days at my friend Zak's house and visited some of my family over there. I left on a Friday and did the last 200 miles in the early morning. The rest is history. You can see pics of my ride home here:
http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php? t=218057

You should see the non-condensed version of this story : D.

I'd been riding my cafed Sportster for several years with the Pacbog Buell crowd and my best friend had an S1. One of our riding mates posted on the Badweb that his S2 was for sale at $9000 Cdn, which was about $7500US at the time. It had a newly rebuilt T-Storm engine and a lightened crank and was a very nice bike but FMJ posted that it was over-priced and that there were lots of S2's selling for $3500US. I pinged FMJ and told him that if he heard of one at that price, he should let me know. Jim responded that, in fact, he was selling one for that price.

I hadn't really expected that quick of a response but had to put my money where my mouth was. I was just in the process of buying a house, which either means you're totally tapped or that you can get a little extra on the mortgage to pay for toys. (Not the best financial planning, but WTF.)

So FMJ volunteered to meet me halfway, trucking the bike from San Fran to Portland to a mutual friend's house and we had a hand-off party/Daytona party with all my American friends.

At first, I found the bike to be much to up-right of a riding position, pegs too far forward, etc. After five years riding it, I've recently gotten the Sportster rebuilt and find that its way too crotch-rockety, with really floppy steering that I never noticed before. Its funny how you get used to one set-up.

But I now love them both. Different tools for different tasks. The S2 is now used for two-up touring while the Sportster is for serious hooliganism. Not that the Buell isn't better at that too, but the Sportster is more challenging.

And an added bonus of the Buell: we in British Columbia must have vehicle insurance and its $1400/year for me. Collector vehicles, generally over 25 years old and in good original condition, can be insured for $250/year (but can't be used to get to work.) And a vehicle 15 years old qualifies if there were less than 1500 made. So I can ride the Buell for $20/month, compared to the $110/mth that I pay for a short riding season on the Sporty.

i test-rode a '95 s2 at hd of fredneck, (where i recently met joe/ratbuell), when these bikes first came out, in 1995. i liked it a lot! but, i am cheap, (and not rich), so it was hard to seriously consider a $12k bike. and, at 76hp/76lbs of torque, it was a mite slow, even compared to my ride at the time - a 1983 honda interceptor.

fast-forward to three years later; 1998 - the new buellies are now making >100hp, and more torque to boot! now, i am seriously in the market to replace my interceptor, and an s2 that can be updated to s3 engine specs is on my short list. but, i have also become smitten by ducati's - what should i do? well, i decide to leave it to fate - the first best deal i can find on a ducati monster or ss/sp; or on a '95/96 buell s2 that's either red, midnite blue, or white, will be what i buy. (if i had the cash & space, i'd have simply bought all three, haha!) i found a nice one-owner red s2 w/<10k at a hd dealer two hours away; i worked a deal for $8400 that included the lowers, and rebuilding the engine to s3 specs. it dyno'd at 80/80. since then, i added the race pipe & can, and thunderslide for the carb. after re-jetting, prolly added another 10/10 to the dyno number, but i haven't checked. it is one sweet bike, that won't get sold, even tho i lust after other newer buells, ducati's, and the aprilia sxv550... if/when money and space becomes awailable, the collection (now including a '78 ducati darmah) yust might have to grow!

Number 35: Number 35 was advertised on the badweb and I thought about it for about 15 seconds. I did not negotiate at all, all I did was ask the owner how he wanted payment.

I finally figured I better talk to Lynn so I pulled up the pictures and asked her what she thought. She said "thats a pretty bike" which I replied good, I just bought it.

It took me over a month to go pick her up but it was just about all original. All I did was the usual stuff, bearings, isolators, paint polish and shine. I like the stock S2 for around town much better due to the stock exhaust. The handle bars and foot pegs on the S2 vice the S2-T really makes a difference in the ride of the bike.

When I went to AZ to pick her up I took a Sporty frame and had Bartimus meet me there. Bartimus really wanted the big white bags on the S2 but I did not want to part the guys bike out in his garage so I waited and sold them to him later. Mike (the PO) had the S2/S1 Jacket and gave that to me as well. I know Bart wanted that jacket after he told me it would never fit me. It did of course and I asked Bart to throw it in the truck for me just to rub it in a bit.

When sold my Electraglide I had so much money left over that I picked up a S1W that was in need of a lot of work. I promised Lynn it was my last bike and if I bought something else I would sell one of them.

Well number 240 (1996 S2-T) come up on craigslist in MT. The owner had all the paperwork, the timing cover and most of the original parts of the bike. I have always found it easier to build a bike when not concerned about how original it is. This is one I wanted to restore so Lynn and I did a road trip up to MT and I picked up number 240 for 2,650 dollars. It has 45K miles but was in good shape. It was caked in MT mud. The owner of the bike wanted to get a Uly (at least he is staying Buell).

As I was bagging and tagging parts for this bike I quickly realized it is going to take a lot of effort and it may take a couple of years to do. I decided to slow down and enjoy it a bit more. As a matter of fact I have completely stopped because I happened along number 304.

Number 304 was advertised on craigslist as a complete bike. It was the ugliest S2 I have ever seen and the owner wanted way too much so I passed. Too many thing were modified on it.

A couple of weeks later I see the same S2 which someone is parting out to make a chopper. I believe that a person can do whatever they want with their bike. However, I think he felt a little bad about chopping it up when I told him about the S2 history.

I asked the guy what he wanted for everything and mentioned I had a rigid chopper frame from many years ago and we struck a deal.

I decided that I would build this one up. Put the motor from the S1W in it and see how it goes. This is going to be fun.

I did not keep my promise to Lynn and I feel bad. At least until I step into the garage then I feel pretty good.

Buellistic!!!
My Story!!!
I wanted to buy a new 1991 RS1200 in 1991..
They were not available in Canada as they didnt meet DOT specs up here....
I did get the info from Eric , and passed it along not long ago to a fellow BWBer...
Anyhow, once HD got involved , the S2 surfaced and it was to be avail in the Great White North...
At the time I wanted the 1991, the dealer and another friend wanted to try Buells too, thus, the dealer jumped at the chance to bring in the S2 version...
He got a 1994 built bike first, then five 1995s....I bought a yellow 95...
I then procceeded to buy everything Buell I could get my hands on from saddlebags to tshirts....
I ended up helping the dealer sell the other 4, which took him 2 years ta do...
I had alot of problems with the body cracking and Buell ended up replacing it all...Court may re: all this...
Anyhow, the parts were shipped one at a time and ended up being all different shades of yellow....
I rode the bike to Road America and Court and Erik saw it and asked if I had smashed it up and replaced it piece by piece...
I told them the story, and voila, they agreed to replace it one more time...
I then asked if I could try it in white...
They supplied a whole new body in white...I purchased the lowers and deep lids at the same time....Court even sent a photo of it all being painted togehther....Kewl Huh!
Anyhow, I sold the bike in 2001 and regretted it ever since....I still do no where it is, and maybe able to get it back, but its not as good as when I had it unfortunately....
Anyhow, Back to the dealer part story of the 1996 S2t, # 0003, that I have now!
In 1996 he brought in 2 S1s,and a 1996 S2T..
The service manager bought one of the s1s, the other went to another employee....
The poor parkway S2t just sat there...
It remained there for 3 years, new on the floor....They decided to demo it...
It went thru 4 hands after that and got thunderstorm heads and pistons, cams etc...
It remained original parkway blue until i finnaly got it with a chipped piston and 2 bent valves....and rather tough looking..
I repaired the bike and still have it and love it..We gone thru divorce once again , but this time, the S2T remains with me, and will till I pass...
Buells are Great, Beer Is Good, People are Crazy!!!!!..EH !!!!!

Hahaha . . . I'd forgotten about that . . . Steve, when he painted your Ice White Pearl bodywork, used a jig that was built to do the original S2 bodywork.

In order to make the metallic, with the rose, blue and gold, "work" right it was essential to have the bodywork in the same position, while being painted, it would appear on the bike. I remember your's now.

Steve is still doing wonderful work and helped me with 6 custom paint jobs for Buell owners last year, including painting an S3 in an M2 color "for fun".

Great folks!
