Dam it! I was behind a big truck and could not see this huge pothole. I hit it at 40 mph really hard in the front, and then a thump on my boot......What was that? then lots of back fire on the down rev. Oh crap!! I hope I didn't bust off a exhaust stud. Man i spoke to soon, after I had pulled off to the side of the road and looked at the bike. Sure enough the front upper exhaust stud snapped off like a pretzel stick.

I hate these little bastard studs when they snap flush. I can do 2 things.
1. try and get it out myself(Did it once before it was not fun!)
2. pay my friend at the bike shop $50 to get it out in 30 minutes with no tear down and still in the truck unloaded(he is that good)

I have been enjoying this bike so much lately and now this crap, I can't wait until i get the works shock in a couple days. Then i am going to install my new fork spring kit at the same time!

I hate Utah roads!

I'd pay the $50 and be done with it.

Glad you didn't break something more difficult/expensive to repair/replace.
BTW, I have a chrome looking bracket thingy holding the header to the head. The bolts go through this bracket and the nut goes on the outside of it. How come yours looks different? Just wondering.
Also, did you look at the front ISO to see if it took any hits?
I would also pay the $50...

Kalai, he probably slid the retainer down the header so you can clearly see the broken stud.

Are you still riding on that blown shock?

If so, I would stop until you get the works, unless you want this or worse to happen next time...

Just sayin' bro....

The $50 bucks and 30 minute option would have me not only paying that, but throwing in a case of beer on top of it.

Perhaps weld a nut to it?
It might not be "in there" in there, you know?

The key is to not make it worse : )
EZ-outs are the devil.

The wheels are in motion, I had my driver and my mechanic go get the bike from my apartment. It will be fixed tonight I still won't ride it until i have the shock installed and the forks re-built.

HHmmmm Some thing is going on here, The "y" hanger bracket "little rubber iso" the one in the bracket is sticking out on the left side almost 1" It was not like that before this pot hole. I hope i didn't break that to. I didn't have time to mess with it so i left it at my buddies shop for the night....I needed some more parts from my apt. But i noticed that when i got the bike back it had a much bigger (diameter) washer on the outside of the hangar than i had remembered it having. Isn't the washer supposed be small enough to actually squeeze the rubber isos in the clamp? I wonder if this is the problem that started this failure. I have hit potholes before and never had this happen.

If the pot hole was large/deep enough to cause an exhaust stud failure whats the front tire/rim look like?

I looked at the wheel it looks ok. I think because the front forks are so soft and in need of a rebuild that they took most of the blow, But the tire is brand new and has lots of tread so i think it helped a little as well!

I would be giving that front iso a good close look...

my exhaust mounts tend to wander in the bracket not 1"

the front wheel will be off for fork service check the bearings

Sweet!!! The bike is fixed. It took him 2 hrs and he bumped me in front of...( I saw how many bikes he had lined up!) "He said i have enough bike's here that if i closed doors Today, I would still have work for 6 weeks after! He did full reassembly After exhaust stud repair for $70 So i gave him a $20.00 tip and a bottle of bourbon. But i give him tires and service at cost! It is a good relationship. I also got my new works shock! And i talked to an American sport bike association Sponsor. About having the front forks re-built and the whole bike's suspension tuned for $285. Man what a good deal this turned out to be! The works shock is just sweet, I showed it to some girlfriends of my GF and they said wow what is that. I tried to explain what it was. But to no avail. I also went and got a new wheel bearing set for both wheels.

Dude, not only is she a strong runner but now with tuned suspension, that bike is gonna rock.

Sounds like a killer deal on getting those studs out, glad that went well, we have had so many "broke off a ez out in my broken studs" threads on here! Be careful with that next set.

So very jealous right now, haven't rebuilt my shocks yet and they're getting soft. Local Race Tech guy in Sandy doing your forks?

Mike, It is a sponsor off that website you told me about. Utah sport bike association. The sponsor is "Corporate suspension" 867 E. Apple Park Way (3035 So.) He does a lot track side tuning so getting the bike in can be tricky! Usually after 6 p.m. Here is a link to the guy http://www.corporatesuspension.com/index.php I am going to install my works tomorrow. I am kinda hoping for some bad weather so i don't mind not being able to ride it!

Corporate, yeah! I tried all night to remember his name and never could. That guy's name is Jason - I think he's a radiologist for a full time gig, he tuned my Sgt's suspension when he was racing last year and apparently he does really good work.

Enjoy!
