I've been told that the M2 is the better of the tubers.

I've never liked the tail section on the M2. Are there any other compatible tails that will fit?

Fats, you can weld in a s1 tail, airtech makes a bunch of different tails, or you could use a 97-98 m2 tail that is similar looking to a s1 tail.

On that note, a 99+ m2 tail is super comfy, i could go all day on it

Thats mine with the manta and the 97 tail with a corbin on it, obviously it has a lot more mods than just the tail and tank, but it is a m2.

I really prefer the looks of the X1, but I've been told to beware.

Huh. I don't think the X1 is any worse than any other tube Buell. It's probably the most bike for the money, too, as prices don't seem as high.

I like the looks of the first-gen S1 best, followed by the first-gen M2 / S2. The S3 and X1 look a tad odd to me, to be honest. They're all good looking bikes, though.

I was told the m2 was a more reliable bike because of the carb.

Well, you learn something new every day. The S3 was FI, too, so has that got a black mark on it? Every manufacturer that goes with FI has a few bad years, but I see the X1 on more "best of" lists than the M2.

The later bikes just look bigger to me. I do like the tail on the X1 better, but it seems taller, too.

Your M2 looks great, Matt. I was thinking of picking up a Manta tank for long tours. Any problems mating it to the thin first-gen tail section?

I'm not sure what you mean by first-gen M2. There wasn't much change through the M2 years and I wouldn't call them the first generation bikes Buell made.

It seems like you both are looking for a pre-X1 Buell with a carb. I wouldn't say stay away from an FI bike, just know they are different to tune for modifications than a carb. I bet if you ask who likes carbs and who likes FI the person answering might prefer the bike they happen to own.

If you search for production numbers they correspond to the numbers of owners here. When the X1 was made the production was many times more than earlier tubers and RRs or RSs. Did you know in 2000 there were more Buells produced than from 1987-1997?

S2s are very desirable and so are S1s but they will provide a different riding experience. It really depends on how you ride.

Let's hear what you have ridden before, what you liked and what you don't. Maybe the distance you intend on riding in an average day and how often you will ride 2 up. Have you ever scraped your pegs on the ground in a turn.

This will help you focus on the models that might be the "best" for you. There's a lot of info here and a great group of enthusiasts.

Oh, I have a '97 M2 and am VERY happy. I was just chiming in about what Jeremy might like.

Changes to the '99 and later M2 were bigger (Manta) tank, different bodywork, wider seat, a header that went inside the frame rails, different swingarms, a slightly different level of tune (different heads, I think). I think the bike gained about 10-15lbs and stood a tad higher in the normal mode from '99 on.

The first-gen M2 to me looks a LOT smaller and less... Um... Odd. They DID improve things they were told were wrong -- and the changes might seem minor -- but I would probably get an X1 over a second generation M2, that's all. And I'd get a S2 or first-gen M2 / S1 before the X1 based on superficial stuff. That's what I did. There was a X1 FS for almost exactly what I paid for my M2 when I bought the bike.

I have a 99+ M2 Chassis with a S1 welded-on sub frame if interested...

+1 the M2 is more comfy than a stock saddled X1 or S1 Lightning.

But Cyclones being better than a X1 is questionable.

Ft, the tail is cast and bolts up the frames are not compatible, if you want a tube frame I suggest the X1 for ease of maintence, because you will work on it....

its the cost of character.

Thanks Randy,

The manta tank mounts just fine with the skinny tail, i like the looks better personally.

The m2 is the jack of all trades, you can tour on it, turn it into a more sporty bike, or just leave it as is. It does all things well. It probably would have been cheaper for me in the long run to buy a x1 but i dont really care for the cast tail on them.

You really cant go wrong with any of the tubers, yea they have their quirks, but that comes with the bike.

Make it easy on yourself and get a S1 and and a S2!Then you can open your garage and decide how much seat you need at that time!

It will take me a while to decipher your acronym describing an S2.I'm guessing it starts like this:Flippin Unbelievably Good Looking Y'all! Is that what you had in mind?

Would love to. Time will tell.

I may have to see if Tom will let me sport his motard if something else doesn't come through.
