ive posted before and had no luck. 01 X1 22k runs great till about 20 mins in the motor starts rattling and the exhaust changes. sounds like a lifter going bad. i changed lifters that didnt work. checked oil press. and changed oil. no change. took it to axtell sales and they think it might be injector or ecm??? i cant see it being that because of the motor noise. any ideas HELP!!!!! PLEASE

Does it always do it after 20 minutes? From cold or hot?
Do you get an ECM light?
Have you checked ECM fault codes?

no lights and it just runs like crap after you ride it for awhile. it will do it if you ride on the freeway for a couple minutes. sounds like the top end is coming of and the exhaust note changes so it sounds like it has no power but it still runs ok. when it does it, it idles higher and the sound is real hollow out the pipe. had it to many mech and nobody has a clue. and of course it never did it for the prev owner. yea right

If you have an air compressor, you can get a fitting (or just push real hard with a rubber end on the hose) and check for busted/bent valves or collapsed lifters. Get the motor to the point that it makes the noise. Turn it off, put the rear on a lift of some sort and put it in 5th gear so you can use the wheel to turn the engine. Pull the spark plugs. Put the air hose in one of the plug holes, get a tight seal, and turn the engine using the wheel. You'll be able to hear the air from the hose go thru the carburetor; then it should stop (and the wheel will get some resistance to it because the valves are closed and you're 'compressing' the 'mix' by turning the wheel); then it should go thru the exhaust; then it should go thru the carburetor again; then stop; then exhaust. If it never gets to the "stop" portion...you've got a valvetrain issue. Doesn't tell you *what* it is...but this will tell you *where* (which cylinder, which valve) it is so you can start looking at hard parts.

Sorry, LOL, in a weird mood. Since it happens after about 20min, but runs fine until then, I would default to Al's Rules (from American Sport Bike). One of his top 5 rules is if there is a running issue, replace the engine temp sensor. It can go bad, or out of calibration, and not show a code. If it is the problem, it MAY be telling the ECU that the engine is close to being over-temp, and is trying to go into skip-spark mode to save the engine.

Could be something to look at. Really hope this helps, Dave.

+1 what Akbuell says. I had a temp sensor issue which would show up intermittently once the bike was warm. Mine did show up an error code though. Here's a page on checking error codes if you don't know how http://bcrider.com/DDFI.html Note your connector might be under the seat.

I'd check the codes first (cause it's easier) then follow Ratbuells tips.

Your profile says M2 with mods "ext. swing, air shift, shift minder ". Does the bike have any engine mods?

that makes sense cuz when the bike was running like crap and hot i took the garden hose to it and cooled it and it started running great. axtell thinks it ecm related so that would support that angle. as far as my profile: that was my old drag bike and this is a diff bike. it supposed to be all stock. its mark antzacks old bike from WI.

Akbuell has a good suggestion. This happened to me, gas mileage went to hell, plugs fouled.

btw, you're talking about an X1 right, fuel injected bike?
