Hi all,

Just curious if anyone wears gaiters to help stave off the heat from the header? I have a ’97 M2 and had the pipe thermocoated last fall, but it’s still way hot against my leg. A long day of cruising – not sportbike riding or touring on highways, but just going distance on backroads – leaves me with a red welt on my leg just above my boot.

I’ve considered taller boots, but gaiters would work, too… Maybe something made for firefighters? ; )

Thanks!

Randy

I was just looking a pair of gaiters JUST like this, Ebutch! Funny. I'm just not sure they'd get me up high enough, tho. My bike boots are just a hair too low, and I think they'd be taller than these particular gaiters.

I was actually looking at equestrian boots / gaiters. They would either look way tough of silly stupid, and they JUST may work.

I talked with my mechanic just this week about rejetting and his feeling was it wasn't called for, but the bike is set up for a Force pipe and I have a Borla on it now...

Would adding an oil cooler or running one of those American Sport Bike big-a$$ oil tanks lower overall engine temps radiating off the header, I wonder? I must think of new ways to spend money on the bike! Can I sell this as a safety issue to the wife?

LOL! Do you still wear the flip flops, Ebutch? Might be one of those ideas that are GREAT in theory, but don't play out great in the real world? OTOH how many times have I had a frog propel itself at my toes?! That's what I call BAD luck!

I don,t have heat prob. on my leg 0n S2T and S3 but other Bad- weber's I observed use reflector shields,high-temp pipe -rap,reflective fire wall adhesive mat available at NAPA I use.And you addressed yours with a coatig.I did not read your post right the 1st time Randy. But guess you have an older Classic Buell. I tried out a 2003 Fire Bolt and leg was hot on it and too short for me. wheel base that is.

are you getting this welt through your jeans/pants? if so then something is a miss or you have VERY sensitive skin.

I wear shorts when I ride in the summer and even the hottest days with the most aggresive of riding has only gotten my leg slightly red (doesn't even hurt to the touch).

Yep, it burns right through my pants. My header is so close to my leg that I hit it occasionally moving my foot on the peg. It's melted a pair of riding pants and left a hairless spot on my leg, I kid you not.

This is a first-gen M2... different than your X1, S3s or later Cyclones, where they moved the pipe inside of the frame rail, TXtech. I didn't have this issue riding my brother's 200X Thuderbolt, either.

I don't even have a heat shield on the bike right now. Maybe I'll get a mat today. I've never been happy with this thermocoating. Seems like I heard somewhere that black isn't an effect coating for some reason, but this might have been a put on.
