I have a 01' X1, fuel injected. I am looking for a air intake for it and was thinking of a forcewinder or a harley big bore intake. The problem with HBBI is that I wont be able to get on until Sept. at the earliest. So I was looking on ebay for one and seen some for the carb. models. My question is can I use any air intake with a 40mm opening or does it have to be specifically for a fuel injected model. I would like to have a good used one. I was just wondering what my options are, can I use any with the 40mm opening. Thanks for all the help in advance. See ya, Matt Tully

"PRODUCT IMPROVE" the OEM SNORKEL and stick a K&N RC-3860 Tapered Filter ...

Only "PROBLEM" with this FORCEWINDER Style set up it is not worth a "BUELLschitte" in the "RAIN" ...

What you say, PUT A SOCK OVER THE AIR FILTER SO YOU CAN RIDE IN THE "RAIN" !!!

Put a supposedly better air cleaner on so the engine breaths better, THEN YOU PUT A "SOCK" over the air filter to limit the
intake air flow, "WHAT !!!" ...

i throw this out everytime somebody is looking for an air cleaner. "AIRTECH" look under s1 on their website and check it out. very inexpensive and very custom look. functions perfect on my bike without hanging off the side like an HBBI. all ya have to do is pop a hole in the backing plate for the AIT sensor, right now mine is just hanging inside the intake cover and has had no issues.

To actually answer your question. Yes. You just need to find a place for your IAT. Some will just zip it up under the tank somewhere. I bought this one and it works great:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=350211243656

I just stabbed my IAT sensor into a hole on the back side of the filter.

One other note- you need to re-route your breather lines out of the intake. I had already done this so no big deal on my end. This set up works GREAT.

Limitedx1, how is the performance with your intake? Does it have a high air flow?

Andymnelson, are you happy with the the intake you have?

Limited x1, I checked the air tech website, did you have any trouble with the fit of the air tech intake. I do like that intake. So you would totally recommend it. How does it look unpainted? It looks to me kinda dull.

i could tell no performance difference between the race cleaner or a HBBI. i love the clean look. the airtech is fiber glass so it can be painted any color you want. i had it rattle canned black before i got the nice work. fitment is 100% awesome! i can take some detailed pics if you guys are really interested.

i 110% recommend it as i dont know another person running it on bad web and it looks like it came from buell to fit between the frame rails. awesome knee clearance as well!

LimitedX1, I would like some more detailed pics please. I am very interesed in getting one. How much of a improvement is it over the stock setup. So if you dont mind please post some more pics. What about the filter. The one on the site is green looking, I dont think I would like that. How much are the replacement filters.

By the way, what in the world is a racewinder?????

Limited X1, I'm glad to see that someone has this. I've been looking at it for my 2000 M2. I think it looks good. Have you been able to test it out in a good rain? Can the filter be cleaned between replacements?

it is a foam uni filter just like a dirt squirter one, steel mesh ring inside wrapped in foam, get oiled just like a k&n.

as far as rain, ive never road with it in the rain, it would be better than a forcewinder thats for sure, i wouldnt chance any aftermarket intake but......the foam and oiled filter i believe would shed water. maybe not in a monsoon, but i would feel comfortable riding in a shower.....the covers have a gap when they go together, so you could tape off the hole and still get air, not ram air but you could ride for sure.

Performance is great. I can't say that I have "more power"...haven't dyno'd it or anything. The thing I can say for it is that I have noticeably snappier throttle response now.

Here is a forcewinder.

A carbon fiber ham can

Other options include Airtech, Moflow by cycle vision, S&S air cleaners, Zippers air cleaners, most sportster air cleaners, stock conversions and the ebay selection just to name a few.

They (Racewinders) look a lot like a carbon rep of the stock airbox with an open front don't they?

this pic is from the back to show the slimness of the setup. it bolted directly to the intake flange with no modifications.

this pic is taken from the engine looking at the back of the setup. my rear isos were bad when i got the bike, so needless to say the whole frame was saggin about an inch low, so the back of the intake was rubbing the frame thats why it is white. once i replaced the isos the thing fits perfect with plenty of space bewteen the backing plate and the frame. also this pic shows that the outside cover overlaps the backing plate and has three rubber style nuts to hold it together, so there is enough room the fit your iat wire between the two pieces and hang the sensor inside the intake.

you should never have to buy a replacement filter, as it is foam and able to be cleaned and re oiled.

LimitedX1 said that he doubled his money when he sold his. Is that because of the performance you get out of the racewinder or the fact that they are so rare or both?

Rare because they were only made a few short years and not popular then.

I could get something like that racewinder made in Carbon Fiber if I had a commitment of 15 and one to measure for a mold. I have a connection for a true carbon artist that makes everything from airboxes to dashes for BMWs and exotics. He would need a part to look at for pricing but I would guess between $200-$250.

We couldn't make an exact copy if it's patented but the first step would be gauging interest...then signing up as a vendor.
