Mike,
Beautiful pictures! Your bike is stunning, that is such a gorgeous color!
I'm sorry to hear about your problems on the way home, your duct tape job did give me a chuckle.
Eric,
You and Jaci are real troopers to ride all those miles, on a stock seat no less!
We should take up a collection and BUY you a corbin! LOL

Good to hear that everyone finally made it home safe and sound. This certainly was an event I will remember for years.
Good people + fun bikes = lots of fun!
See you in Texas!

More like a collection for a Baldwin.

I see a door prize for next year in the works.

When you see Frankensportster bidding on a Corbin on eBay, I hope you'll know what to do.

It seems that will power was all that was holding the bike together as well. I forgot I'd let my car insurance run out while we were gone so I had to ride to work. Monday the right mirror fell off. As I was fixing that, I noticed that three of the four screws holding the headlight on were AWOL. Next day on the way in to work, the speedo re-set knob lost its bezel nut. And on the way home, the engine became drenched in oil, with worried the hell out of me until a wash-down revealed it to be a leak in the oil-pressure switch. Amazing none of this happened all through the trip and its just collapsed now.

Eric- If you find a replacement for that bezel nut let me know, I lost mine some time back and have the knob secured with a ziptie wrapped around like a nut. I haven't found any nuts yet with 1- the correct pitch 2- the correct diameter 3- the correct low profile.
Still hunting.

Court- Thanks, remind me to tell you about it sometime...

Really though, that was a seriously fun ride.

The bezel nut is readily available at HD.
Probably one of the cheapest parts you can get at a HD dealer.

Part #7518

Guess how I know this one?

That lip is great, with it I get no helmet buffeting, and it matches the lines of the bike.
Thanks Brad, I thought it was a Buell specific part. My S2 parts manual doesn't have a separate number for it, just the whole cable assembly.
Frank, you are feeding my lust for another S2. I am thinking of trying to convince Macy that we should sell the Sportster and the S3, and pick up another S2 for her. Congrats scoring your new one.

Just for an update, the oil dripping from the oil-pressure sending unit was coming from the oil filter, which has a pinched gasket from, apparently, my sloppy installation. How it went for 5500 miles before it failed, I have no idea.

First, let me reiterate what an awesome time I had at the inaugural gathering of the S2 clan. F-ing Frank, Lovely Lynn, "Tyranosaurus" Rex and Black Bart did a fantastic job setting up the rally and guiding the attendees (like herding cats, it seemed to me) for maximum enjoyment. I can only hope that next year's gathering can live up to this year's (Ross, we GOTTA talk!).
That said, here are my pictures from the rally (not of my butt, much to Blake's relief).

Chapter One
Didn't get any pics of my start out of Austin; too eager to get going (and I was late to meet up with..."da BOMB").

,Denny

Spent the night with my folks in Lubbock. Here I am getting ready to head out on the second leg. Yes, I am a "white sock queer".

Chapter Two (Beware The Tracks!)
Oy! WTF! The gall-darned railroad tracks in Texico (on the Texas/New Mexico border) have trashed my S2! Heads will roll at the railroad commission!
Seriously, there are four sets of tracks on the border here and the New Mexico side has a 3" vertical lip from the tracks back up the the pavement! I thought for sure I'd bent my front wheel when I hit it. When we pulled over at a gas station to assess the damage, the "Nazgul" had popped both lower fender screws (those that hold the fender to the front of the forks), the headlight had sprung it's spring and come off of both adjuster bolts and was flopping around in the fairing, the windshield had a nice 8" crack running across it and I later found a bolt popped out of the tail bodywork under the seat (that had stripped its clip nut) and a turn signal wire that broke at the connection (possibly not related to the impact). MAN! Of course the Uly just took the whole thing in stride.

,hardware

We located a local hardware store and, with many trips in and out (much to the amusement of the hot young thing at the register) procured the necessary items for repairs (mostly allen wrenches, duct tape, screws and beef jerky ).

,duct tape

Upon completing repairs, we hit the long, straight roads of Eastern New Mexico again...

Chapter Three - Now We're Gettin' Somewhere!

Here we are in Las Vegas. Hey! Where the hell are all the casinos and half-naked babes?!! What? Oh, Las Vegas NEW MEXICO...
By this time, our butts are starting to complain..."are we there yet?" "Shut up! I'll tell you when we're there!" So, we felt it was appropriate to park in front of the "Sore-Ass Riders Museum" or something like that.

,rough riders

,rough riders 2

The nice chicas at the gas station told us where to get the best New-Mex food in town, so we had lunch...standing up! (not really, but it was terrific comidas; cheap and plentiful)

I'm back! Not well rested, but semi-functional. On with the pictures!

Chapter Four - Mountains At Last!

Left Las Vegas and headed up 518 toward Taos. We actually passed by Buena Vista New Mexico, then on into the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the same range we'd be riding in, or paralleling, all the way to Poncha Pass, just south of Buena Vista. Here we are in Mosca gassing up.

I hadn't seen a Sinclair filling station in Texas in years. I love that dinosaur!

Finally we arrive at der Rauschke Haus, friends of Denny's that were generously allowing us to invade their home.

,rauschkes

Conveniently located just one mile from the host hotel, der Rauschke Haus features many amenities including...hey, what's that noise? Oh crap! Denny says it's a BEAR!

,bear

Oh, not "it's a BEAR", but "it's Bear", as in Paul "Bear" Rauschke, our erstwhile host.

Chapter Five - Finally, Some FUN Riding!

Up 'til now, the trip had been about getting there, but now we are there! Sure, the journey had had some beautiful scenery (all of which I failed to capture with my camera ) and some fun, twisty roads (mostly 'round Pontotoc Texas, Taos New Mexico and Poncha Pass, Colorado), but now we were able to unload our baggage, take our time and really enjoy the ride.
Friday morning, Bear led us on a terrific route back down 285 through Poncha Pass (explaining that it was, in fact, NOT named after Officer Francis "Ponch" Poncherello, Erik Estrada's character on "CHiPs") to a delicious meal in Villa Grove.

,villa grove

With our bodily appetites sated, we continued on to 114 to further feed our souls.

,114

,114a

,114b

A fine ride was had up 114 to a pull-over at the top of the pass where we startled a covey of Honda riders. Most of them didn't seem happy to see us, (perhaps they were unsettled by the "authority" of our Buells) though one was intrigued when I adjusted my carb's idle while still sitting on the bike.

,hondas

Denny was forced to do the "assless chaps jig" upon spying a pair.

,assless chaps jig

Then, off we go, down the other side to Gunnison for fuel and refreshments.

,114c

,bear114

,denny114

Next, it was back east on 50 up to Monarch Pass.

,denny50

,ulymonarch

I see snow up in them thar trees! I was tempted to run up the embankment and get a snowball to hit Denny with, but the altitude combined with my general poor physical condition quickly cured me of such nefarious intentions.

,snowmonarch

I also encountered an affliction rarely seen on the S2. Alpine ants had constructed a tiny tramway going into my tankbag and were removing my stash of honey-roasted peanuts one at a time!

,trammonarch

Then down once again and back to the ranch. A day well spent and one that should be rewarded with delicious libations.

,drink?

Don't mind if I do!

,drink!

,relax

After this, I think we'll run down to the host hotel and see who has arrived! Pics tomorrow...signing off.
