Well, I do not think anyone noticed that I have not been around for a few days. Lynn has been trying to keep me sane and it has not been easy.

As many may know I was looking for a Westwind to restore. I looked for a long time and could not find anything near me or in the condition I wanted. Around 21 June I decided that what the hell, I am a S2 guy so why don't I go with something I know. My S2T was perfect when I got it, my 95 S2 needed a little love but not much. There is a world a difference between the two bikes. The S2T is my favorite but I love riding them both.

So what is a guy to do when he finds a S2T for 2,650 dollars in the best color (Quicksilver Metallic)? Well, get a plane ticket and fly to MT to get her and ride her back. It took Lynn about 5 seconds to say no. Of course when she figured out I was not going to stop talking about it she added "your not going without me." So we took the truck drove 1000 miles, picked up the bike, and drove 1000 miles home. I am beat. Number 240, with documentation, all body work, soft and tank bag plus a crap load of extra parts is home.

Let the restoration begin!

The topend has been modified and she has the normal wear and tear for a bike with more than 50K on her.

This is going to be fun!

I'm jealous. I may just swing up there and steal the bags and lowers. Somebody that'll actually use them needs them : p.

Ok Jody, I will be here and Lynn just tried to call you. We will pass on the fireworks. Neither Lynn or I enjoy sounds that sound like incoming anymore.

Well. I unloaded the bike and did a quick assessment of her. Lets see, XB heads, S1 cams, supertrapp exhaust. All that stuff will go. The headers have a slight crease in them so I will be looking for a new set. I found a brand new S2 seat locally and will be getting rid of the corbin. Actually I will put it on the other S2T and sell the one off of mine.

The windshield is cracked (I have another)

It has a race air cleaner and that will be replaced.

The rear pully is scored pretty bad, I may have another. This is due to the lower belt guard and I have seen a lot not installed correctly.

The shifter assembly is kind of redneck and will be replaced.

The rear tail section has been butchered but it just so happens I have another.

Sidestand mods, I guess the holes are for air flow.

I took her around the block and I knew she has an exhaust leak but she pulls strong and the timing has been advanced for the S1 cams.

Fairing bag, tank bag, inner bags and lowers were included. The Signature Series stuff includes the letter from EB, timing cover in box and the mini build sheet, pretty much every thing.

The PO is a nice guy and we talked bikes for a while. He bought it from someone local to his town.

The biggest challenge will be matching the paint. I have not given up on this but the closest match I have seen is my other S2T and it is actually lighter in color but that was the closet Dupont could do. I inquired to Buell about getting the body work but no answer yet.

I have been thinking of modifying the 95 S2 a little and I may do a parts swap (heads, pistons and cams).

The frame has the usual nicks in it so it will be repainted as well (are these frames painted or powder coated? I always thought they were painted). There is a steering stabilizer on it and that will come off. I will most likely need to sell stuff like that to off set the cost a bit. I also need to sell one bike (orders of Lynn) looks like the S1W or 95 S2.

I really wanted to fly up to Montana and ride her back. Lynn was not keen on this but after the S2 Gathering, when everyone got to ride their classic machines to Colorado I really wanted a similar adventure. Looks like that will wait till next year.

I will take my time with this one and it will be done right. I have done a few bikes from the frame up and know the tricks and the time involved.

This going to be fun, I really liked Montana however not only is it Big Sky Country it is also big dirt country.

The tail section is toast.

A glimmer of hope

I love this stuff!

Congrats, Frank!!! I'm jealous.

I may have a few things you'd be interested in. You've definitely got a few that pique my interest. I'll send a PM once I update my file with replacement parts/numbers/cost.

Thanks Butch. Invaluable information.

Roger, we will be in touch. I need to come up with a list then barter what I can. I am thinking this may take a year or two. First thing after I get it cleaned up, and make the list, is to build the motor while it is in the frame, then I will drop the motor and strip everything else then powder coat the frame and hopefully find a good painter. the last one I used sucked.

Stuff like foot pegs, blinkers, wiring harness, cables etc I will get from the dealer.

Frank, congrats. I'm diggin' your new ride. It's too bad you couldn't talk Lynn into letting you fly and ride. I'd probably been cheaper than diesel anyway. I certainly understand the desire for an adventure. I flew to Detroit and rode mine home to Amarillo, and as I've said before, any bike I buy from now on will have a similar experience : D. Sent you an email BTW.

Frank:

>>>The biggest challenge will be matching the paint.

I can help. Buell is painting bodywork nearly everyday and still produces S2 stuff.

I have 3 projects in there now and can get you paint info.

I might be a candidate for that air cleaner cover is you get rid of it.

Great buy!

Lucky man, Mr. Skinner. I'm about to give up on finding a Westwind chassis and call the guy who bought my S2 to see if I can buy it back. Of course, if you know of any RS1200s you aren't planning on buying, I'll pay a finder's fee. And lobby for the annual gathering to be in Eureka Springs, AR, someday.

My wife couldn't understand why I drove in '02 from St. Loo to Charlotte to buy an S2, couldn't I just buy a bike here? First I went mute, then I went to NC.

Moxnix, actually I might give up my 95 S2 but being all the way out in Colorado you might have issues with the better half, again!

BTW: Eureka Springs AR, sounds like a little slice of heaven. I would be in for that. Hell, I would be in for any place with a bunch of S2s owners.

Court, the air cover is toast, the tank cover ate into the air cover and it has a big hole in it. I really need that paint info if you do not mind. If Buell is producing S2 parts in Quicksilver I would be very interested in just purchasing from them rather than trusting a paint guy.

Send me an email or just give me call when you have time.

My wife is in Austin w/ oldest son. Maybe the young one needs a road trip. Tom Waits on the stereo and Cracker Barrel stops. I'll check on my old S2 first, as it's already tinkered and less than a collector's item. I kept the spare wheels, polished Marchesinis from Am Sptbike. Like soudough starter, I kept them around to seed another project.

"are these frames painted or powder coated?"
They are powder coated.Brankin gave me the phone number for the company that did the coating for Buell.I called and tried to get the powder number or see if they could recoat the original gray.
The woman I talked to kept saying that they did so many different grays that I would have to specify which gray I wanted.
The '96 S2T gray used on the frame and wheels,I replied. We did so many grays,do you have a powder number?
We went round and round like this for a while,I finally thanked her and hung up.

As the vultures circle:
Dibs on your old corbin?
I may have need of the steering dampener if I can see a way to fit it to the Sportster.
I may have a chromed shifter lever and a spare pulley, if you need either.

Yes, but I would be doing the same thing.

Eric, I will make a list of things needed and things for trade soon.

I have been messing with the bike most of the day only taking a break when a fellow Buell rider came over to have a Independence Day dinner. We watched the rain and then hail come down. It was a good day.

I thought of you for the corbin (and Jaci) so you will have dibs. I will be getting rid of the one on the S2T I had at the Gathering. The one on the bike I just bought is very similar to Mike's and I really liked that one so I will keep it.

If they were powder coated it would have been by Classic Coatings . . . I'm not sure they were. But Brankin would know.

The color was "Charcoal".
