While cleaning my latest acquisition, a 99 X1, I noticed that the oil sending unit does not have a wire on it and when I found the wire, it looked melted. The oil pressure light is not on and the bike runs fine. Should the wire be replaced or fixed? Should the sending unit be replaced? Should I leave it alone? Previous owner didn't seem to have any issues with it. Comments? |

I'm not sure how the pressure switch is made, normally closed? But yes, it should be wired up. Test the wire (put it to ground or 12v) and make sure that the oil pressure instrument light may not be out. Go get the FSM before you wrench on the bike as well. |

Service manual ordered and on the way. I'll leave it as is until the book gets here. |

I couldn't leave well enough alone...The sending unit is okay but the wire to the connecting cap has broken off. I did a temporary fix by crimping a loop connector to the wire, sliding it onto the sender and securing it with the original cap. All is well for now. I'm hoping the cap is available as a part. |

The cap can be picked up at any auto parts store. It's the right angle cap with a pig tail wire. You will have to splice it onto the stock wire. Solder and shrink tube are the way to go. If you do it carefully, you can't even see that has been repaired. Brad |

I actually picked one up at my local HD dealer for $4. Cheapest thing I ever bought there. I never thought it would be possible. |

Does anyone know if the sending unit can be bought at an auto parts store? |
