I took my ignition switch apart after it failed on me to see how things work - and don't sometimes. Once I got inside, it seemed obvious this baby was just plain worn out. Here is back of the switch with wires cut off:  The contacts are badly carboned up from arcing:  Closer - you can see the plastic is melted at about 6 oclock from center:  cleaned up the way they are supposed to be:  a parting shot - even the springs are fatigued:  Sometimes things just wear out.... like me some days! I went through the same thing. After checking out the replacement options - none of which I liked, I cleaned it up, put it back together (here is the important part) and added a relay to take the high current out of the switch! That was about 2 years ago and I have not had any problems since. | ||

BUELLers: Just to let you'll know the supplier of the ignition switch on my 1997 S3T(has a 107,870.9 miles as of the last ride) provided good IGN. SW's. ... "BUT" of course, probably the real reason is the IGN. SW. is under(sometimes referred to as the AUSTRALIAN IGN. SW. POSITION) the gas tank on the left side shielded from water ... MAY THE LONG LASTING buell BE WITH YOU !!! |
