Based on the color of a tailpiece I picked up I decided to paint my S2 project CCB. The shop could not find the 333fc base coat and was provided a "match". I went to look at the parts earlier this week, and in the booth they looked great. The painter told me, "You can really see it out in the sun" and took a piece into the sun where you could see that the base was a metal flake. The clear coat hadn’t been applied yet, but I can’t see that changing the looks any. I didn't ever look at my tailpiece in the sunlight, but I remember it being more of a subtle shimmer than flake. I’m really into the subtle than the “Look at me!”
The owner of the shop noted that the piece I had may not have been painted to the same directions. I took an un-scientific survey of three owners of CCB bikes, and got responses of: "does not seem to have the metal flake in the base", "If it does it is fine metal flake and is not visable through the top coats", and "It is a very fine flake and you need to look closely to see it."
I’ve got what I’ve got and won’t be changing it. It doesn’t look bad, it’s just not what I expected. I’d like to determine what the right codes are for the next guy, though. I notice that there’s a 333cc in Silver Metallic and a 333va in Parkway Blue. It’s easy for me to rationalize that the fc in the paint code implies a metal flake, but I’d like to know for sure. What was Caribbean Candy Blue originally intended to look like? Did a different base sometimes get used?

When I pick up my parts I’ll get the color code used and post a pic.

From SportTwin:

Carribean Candy Blue
1. Spray 3 coats Sikkens 333 FC.
2. Mix 10% Sikkens 261 with 90% Sikkens 666 Binder. Spray 3 coats.
3. Spray 3 coats Sikkens Autoclear.

http://www.sporttwin.com/Content/pa=showpage/pid=3 .html
(i think ya gotta sign in to see this page)

Of course these codes are no good anymore since Sikkens changed their coding, but maybe they'll help with a search.

That is the recipe I provided the shop. The replacement they used for 333 FC is in question. For all I know, I'm getting the mix originally intended for the bike.
I stripped the tailpiece. I may dig through the trash and dig out the silver flakes to use for a better color match.

Just spoke to the painter.

There is no metal flake.

Base coat is blue . . then the candy blue is sprayed over it.

Thanks, Court!!

Just to double-check, is the base coat blue or silver? What I stripped definitely had a silver base.

Ebutch - Unfortunately I wasn't prepared for the mix to not be available, and stripped the piece I had before sending it to the shop.

The base coat is silver. Buell paints it weekly.

So either:
1) Buell has a lifetime supply of 333 FC
2) The base coat for Caribbean Candy Blue isn't 333 FC and the lists floating around the internet are wrong.
3) Buell knows the paint code for a 333. FC substitute, and some of us would like to know it!

What are they painting once a week?

>>>What are they painting once a week?

Buell does their own parts for all painted Buells. You can buy them at any dealer.

I **think**, although I'd have to find it, that I posted a photo from last year of the process.

I'll post in the Teardown Update thread tonight. I've been thinking the last couple of nights that the last one I posted was June 1, and July 1 would be a good addition. I intended to take a pic on a regular basis but got frustrated with the lack of progress even with a large amount of effort. Things are moving, but slowly.
