i have found a '95 S2 w/18k for sale for $3500 obo. built in '94 #107 w/all docs and signature timing cover. it is a one owner bike. the catch is that the bike has a salvage title on it. the owner tells me the bike fell over in his trailer and scaped up the frame and tank and the cost of stripping the bike to have the frame recoated was enough to total it out. could that be true?

if the damage is minor, is this a decent deal with a salvage title?

what are the downfalls to owning a bike with a salvage title?

any and all help is appreciated as usual.

thanks guys.

Downfalls are if you want to sell it again, its not going to be easy.

If he's telling the truth that is a hell of a deal!

BUT

If it isn't it is hard to say, If I were to buy it I wouldn't sell it. I do not plan on selling mine. BUT it could be come a real collectors piece down the road and even the salvage may not be that big a deal.

If it was me I would get it but talk him down to 3... (that is not planing on selling it)

Find out how many miles since the 'salvage'. If it's 100....probably not a good idea. If its the majority of the 18k, the bike is fine (and yes, that's a totally possible scenario). I wouldn't worry too much about it...once you get an S2, you won't want to sell it anyway ; )

Cool, he is marketing the bike to the chopper crowd too...

There's another S2 for sale in Kalamazoo, MI for $3000 IIRC on www.kalamazoo.craigslist.org

Just type Buell and it'll come up.

The story is plausible but invites skepticism.

But that's a decent deal on the bike and once you get it . . . . . well, I wouldn't take $25,000 for mine.

: )

Yeah . . . THAT good.

I looked at the one in Kalamazoo. Not worth 3K in this market. Kid beat the crap out of it. I would not worry too much about the salvage title. Best you go there, check it out in person, ride it, and you will know immediately if you want it.

i have received a picture of the paint damage, and in my mind it's minimal. the current owner of the bike says that even though the damage was minimal the cost to return the frame to "as new" condition was too much for the insurance company. i'll try to resize and post the damage pic, most of which is to the tank and not the frame on the air cleaner side. i have asked the mileage after salvage question(went to a salvage title 2 years ago), and i am trying to set up a time to see the bike. oh, yeah and trying to sweet talk the wife all at the same time!

thanks for all the info so far boys, always appreciated!

In my experience every part that has a scratch is deemed as needing replacement. My main bike was "totaled", and I ended up with money left over after buying replacement parts on ebay and upgrading others. I expect he's keeping the $$ and trying to sell the bike for the market value of a normal S2.

if your buying a buell, plan on having a piece of metal for a long time.....unless you want to make pennies off of it. They dont seem to be worth their money in scrap at the moment. i would be asking a ridiculous price for my x1 and nobody would buy it so whats the point of ever selling it if you cant get you money out of it.

if you get it for 3 or 3200 you will always be able to ge that back out

i have been looking for an S2 for quite a while now, it's for my enjoyment not to resell. that being said i guess in the end the value of the bike is what i give it. i was just a little concerned about the title.

I bought an r title vehicle only because i knew the entire history of the vehicle. i would just give it a heck of a look over to see what they replaced and how the job was done.

As soon as some extra money comes my way I am investing in a set from airtech.

I would like another stock set with factory paint but that ain't gonna happen LOL I should get the paint ordered before it is stoped though...

Ustorque, 3,500 is way too much for that bike. Look at the frame, it is hard to tell from the pics but that frame looks bent to me. Maybe some else can comment on that.

I am also betting that the air cleaner backing plate and most likely the air cleaner is also cracked. No way did it go down without damaging the front fairing and maybe the tail section. If it went over in a trailer and damaged the frame then you can bet other stuff is damaged. A quick off the cuff assessment is you are looking at 1,500 in parts.

I would offer 1800 for it.

The backing plates broke WITHOUT dropping the bike over.

I'm with Frank . . . I'd offer in the ball park of $2,000 and see what happens.

You can buy body parts (not cheap, but I have a several new sets I keep as spares) from Buell.

I'd ply the guy with lots of whining about the "Salvaged Title" while waving a fist full of $50's in front of him.

If you do not mind please send them to me at f_skinner@yahoo.com. I have asked to be removed from the site but would like to see detailed pics of it.

Think about the normal wear and tear as well. Isolators, front and rear. I usually replace these things on all bikes.
Isolators
wheel bearings
neck bearings
brake pads (front and rear)
tires
clutch, throttle and idle cables
rebuild carb
rebuild brake caliper
belt

That is what I do as a minimum. I recently found another S2T that I may be buying, it is a high mileage one that has had motor work, so I will rebuilding the motor as well and will do a complete restoration on it. It has all the documentation. I will know more when I get better pics.

I really do not feel like I know a bike until I have it in pieces and put it back together.

I did not want to have more than one account. I think I read about that in the rules of the site. Besides, I may have another adventure to post soon.

In the scheme of things I probably should cut down on the BadWeb. Some areas I do not go to anymore because they have lost focus. I have been toying with going back to school when I got a letter saying the Pres was going to pay for it but when I read the fine print it is not good for a Phd so I re-thought it and might do it anyway. I may have some free time on my hands and cannot sit at home. The other option is a new project bike.

Lets see Phd or another Buell. I think the Buell might win. I am too old to go back to school and my only Phd program choice is pysc but they only offer clinical pysc. I hate hearing about other peoples problems, I have enough of my own, and I do not want to intern.

I wish I would have stayed with the hard sciences.

So, I am going through the same thing you are Ustorque. I found a 1996 S2-T with papers and cover. The motor has been modified. The owner assures me I can ride it back to Colorado with no problem but I have found out this. Unless the motor is built by someone that is a perfectionist it is not going to last.

This will be a real restoration. Frame off, body work done and motor returned to stock. This will take years to do and I want to take my time and do it right. I want it to look like it rolled off the showroom and I want to ride it across the state and/or country.

My common sense says take the truck and haul it back. My feeling is this could be an adventure. I need to talk to Lynn, she has to approve by madness.

I fully intend to do both.

: )

You're young enough and Obama will pay for all the school and 40% of the Buell. I am loving this "income redistribution". I never realized how oppressed I was.

Before I could send the note thanking them for the fine Ivy League Masters Degree I find out I am married a oppressed minority (an Italian female). . . this is cool stuff.

Well it seems the username I wanted is already taken by someone who signed up in 2003 and has never posted. Oh well.

Court, I am wondering if you got my email from Monday?

As far as school. I may do another Masters. I talked my company into letting me do whatever I want with the exception of a Phd unless it is in Business Management. I totally understand their position. In the mean time they will pay for some certifications I want to get.

I may just work backwards and learn a trade such as welding, painting, bodywork etc. I hear the construction business is doing pretty good these days. Focus, I need focus.

As far as the purpose of the thread. I talked to Lynn last night and although she will let me get another bike I think I talked myself out of it. There is a sweet S2-T Quicksilver metallic on craigslist with documentation if anyone is interested. Before I do another build I may just redo the S1W since I do not ride it much anyway.

Shawn, you have time. The S2s are not collector bikes, yet! I will give it another 10 to 15 years before we all realize there just are not that many left save the few that we have held onto. It is a shame since these are great all around bikes. Take your time, look for the one your really want. It will show up somewhere, I promise.

Frank
