I'm seeing all the trophies slipping out of my grasp! Just took a closer look at the Signature Series docs that Frank sent me. Looks like I come up short on the earliest build date. And there's no way I'm planning to take enough detours to rack up 1700 miles.

Eric, I will not have that bike there. I will be on the 96 S2T so you may be safe.

thx mike,
i was looking at the bunburner rules the other day and you need 2 witnesses at each end. the gold is doable but tough. at 1700 miles with 4hrs downtime(gas and nap) you need to average 85mph. at 1550 miles with 4hr downtime the average required is 77.5mph. 3hr downtime is 81 and 73.8 respectively. tough on a stock s2 with it's range! 8 stops is 80 minutes minimum! one tip-write your mileage on every gas receipt along with the name of the town and the time. it will help you with your log. don't let the receipts get wet as the data disappears!!
ride safe,
tim

How are you stopping so much? I was getting close to 200 miles a tank when I brought #814 home from Detroit. I was in no rush and stopped a lot for pictures and rest my numb hands and back (I was stupid the first day and carried the backpack instead of strapping it onto the back of the bike), but I still managed 730 miles in 15 hours. If I had my now stock grips, soon-to-be modified Corbin, and strapped the backpack to the bike the first day I probably could've combined the first two days of my trip into one long day (730+690). if I really wanted to push it I could've probably made the last 200 miles home too averaging 100 mph in the middle of the night, like I used to do on the Sporty. It was stupid, but successful. I got 43 mpg @ 100 mph on the XL1200S coming home from Weatherford, OK 2 years ago...

I'm taking the southern route, running across I-70. The mapping program that I use wants me to go I-80 but that means going through Chicago. I HATE Chicago traffic!

Plus Kansas is a state that I haven't crossed off my list yet. Not that I'm looking forward to that state (No offense to Kansas folk! Just too d!mn flat and straight).

I'm planning on checking the rule book again and get everything I need in line. I apparently missed that you needed two witnesses, I thought it was only one... I usually do put the mileage on each receipt. I like checking out the mpg per leg and as a total (geeky yes, put it's kind of neat to know what your fuel burn is under certain conditions.). The town and state thing is a good idea, especially if it isn't on there already.

By my figures (historically known to be wrong ). If I run around 70mph for 180 miles at a segment, that should leave me 20-25 minutes per stop. If I can maintain that (or better) I should be able to do it in about 28.5 hours (30 hour time limit). Tight but doable. That is, if I don't run out of gas, or anything stupid like that, this time!

Starting to hit the panic mode already! It seems like everything on the S2 is one step forward, two steps back lately...

So we'll see... We'll go it a go though...

Heck Eric, I thought the same thing about you when I saw that you were coming from BC! I didn't do the mileage though... Your route looks alot more fun, and scenic, than the route I have.

Looking at the 7 day outlook for the yellowstone basin has me reversing my route. I am instead going down the coast on 101 to california and then across nevada to colorado. Yellowstone is going to have lows in the 30's and highs barely into the 50's with rain/snow showers and thunderstorms. By reversing my great circle route I will give the weather there a chance to settle down and be ready for me to ride through on the way back home. Still leaving crack'o dawn on monday.

i haven't checked tank range lately on the s2 and was going off my 1125r range last year on the 2 runs i made. 150 miles per tank @ 85mph pre flash. 1&3/4 hrs per fuel stop, 8 fuel stops to 1200 miles approx. napped on the tankbag at the gas stations at night. the trip there was easy and i had 4+hrs left. i left out at 9am after a good night's sleep and arrived at destination at 4:30am. had to wait til 7 for Hal's to open to get my witness. i left Road America sunday afternoon at 5pm after a week of fun and struggled to beat the clock home but made it with 45 minutes to spare. longer naps and slower speed average along with a falling sport bag snafu. this was 1300 miles. the route of 1550 miles is west on I10 to ElPaso and turn north to Buena Vista. the route of 1660 miles is head north to StLouis then west to Buena Vista. the weather appears dryer west then north but will average 98 in the afternoon. not sure how that will affect the S2 trying to run constantly at 80mph. trying to do the bunburner gold on the way up and bunburner on the way back. see y'all there!! ps: carry a qt of gas in an oil bottle for emergency use.

Good luck Smoke. I would be more worried about myself at 98* than the bike! I can't stand hot weather riding. I prefer to ride in the fall/winter so I can be comfortable in all my gear. You shoulda seen how bad my dad was torn up from his wreck just outside of Tuscon on Run For The Wall '07. He wasn't wearing any gear except his vest because it was 110* weather...

I know some of you are getting ready to start your journey to Colorado. I am excited to meet each of you and to see those great machines that are propelling you to my backyard.

I hope you find the time to post updates of your adventure on your way here. The Gathering is really a small thing compared to the ride and experience you all are about to undertake. Safe Journeys, Ride Safe and God Speed.

3 more days and we are on the road...
I've pretty much gone through the S2 from front to back, and still have a few nagging problems, but will get 'em worked out in time, I'm sure. ; )
Everyone ride safe, and we will see you in 5 days!!!

Finally packed, new wheels, tires, brake pads, oil change, and somehow managed to get two weeks worth of camping gear onboard. Leaving in the morning, 101 down Oregon coast, through the redwoods, past Mt Lassen, 50 across nevada into southern Utah and Colorado, then up to Buena Vista. See ya all in 5 days.

Frank,
As you may have surmised, I'm not going to be able to make it.. I'm real bummed about it.
For about the last 2 weeks, I've been fighting a back issue. It came to a head last Friday.
A bike ride to Colorado would not be fun, sitting in a car even less so.
I want to get this thing back to normal as quick as possible. I want to be able enjoy the summer especially when my son gets home from the Navy.
If I take care of business now, I will be able to take advantage of late June (maybe), July and the rest of the year.

I hope all participants have a WONDERFUL time. Please take lots of pictures so some of us can live vicariosly through all of you lucky ones.

To everyone attending the Round UP, please ride safely and have a GREAT time.

Brad

Brad, do not sweat it. The will be one each year and in different locations. It is far more important to get well so you can enjoy your time with your son. I suffer from back pains all the time and with all the riding I have been doing I am starting to feel it just about everyday.

A change to the schedule:

Demo rides will be scaled down and will be on Sunday if at all. If this is the only thing that falls through the cracks I will be happy. HCHD is a great Buell dealership and they are doing their best to help out. They have two new riders for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb for their Buells so I think we all understand how busy that can be.

Now all they have to do is WIN!!!!

I'll be leaving Austin tomorrow A.M. with Denny "da Bomb" Bahm. Easy first day up to Lubbock to visit my parents, then Lubbock to Buena Vista on Thursday. We'll be staying with friends in B.V., but we'll hook up with y'all at the motel. Anybody need anything (portable) from Central Texas Buell?

Jay, great news. I will be getting into the Hotel on Thursday afternoon. I have to run up to Denver, come home and head out. My cell phone number is on the handout which I think you got a copy of, if not let me know. Give me a call when you get in. I plan on going to the VFW in the area for a beer and would love to have company.

Hey guys, I was going to save this for the rally but I took a couple of pics of some of the door prizes. These are direct from Buell and I want to tell you all right now. Whomever wins the tail section I will being bugging you to sell it to me. Also, I know some people that are riding will not be able to carry this stuff so do not worry about it. I will mail it all out to you after the rally (except the S2T tail, just kidding) I pickup the rest in a couple of days from High Country HD/Buell.

Frank, am I eligible for any of these door prizes - since I don't have a tuber of any kind? You can count on me to make you a deal on the tail section, and I won't require you to mail it to me, either!

Frank,
Nice Swag! High Country is coming through in a big way. Bummer about the demo rides, but understandable with everything they have going on. One ofthose filter covers would look good on my white S2. ; )

Brad,
You will be in our thoughts. Maybe I'll print out a picture of you and we can set it at one of the tables, that way at least you will get in on the pictures! LOL
Rest and get better, there will be many more rides, health and family come first.

We are packed and ready to go. We will be heading out early Thursday morning, spending the night in the 4 corners area, and should be in BV around noon.
I'll share a beer with ya at the VFW, Frank!

Everyone heading out, ride safe, watch out for the critters, and above all, enjoy yourselves!
