Hey guys,
I am installing the Buell Race exhaust and ignition on my 99 M2. The intake will be left stock for now (unfortunately)... I have the carb off the bike to inspect/clean it and install the proper jets for the mods. Without purchasing an expensive "kit" at this time, what jetting would make this set up run well? I plan more mods in the offseason and purchasing a dynojet kit later.

if you are just doing the exhaust the carb will be fine. When you put a air intake on that is when you will have to change the carb.

45 pilot jet and drill the airscrew plug on the bottom so you can adjust it. It helps on stock bikes. Set to 2.5 turns out from all the way in. Don't tighten too much when you send it all the way in. This should get you close and you can fine tune from there. Search CV or CV 40 jetting or Sportster jetting here or google.

I run 45/190 combo on my S2 and my S1W. Both have the race oval air filter and Buell race mufflers (S1W has full exhaust; S2 has stock header with an adaptor and has a thunderstorm top end and cams). S2 runs fine, guess that 2" collector makes a difference. S1W, I'm getting ready to up the main from 45 to 48 to try and kill the decel popcorn effect. 2.5 turns out as noted above.

Just so you know...you're gonna get a wonky power curve with the exhaust and no intake change. Don't be surprised, or chalk it up to mis-jetting. It's exhaling much better than its inhaling; the physics will be confused for a bit.

When you install the exhaust header, "BE SURE" to use Gasket,exhaust port PN 170480-98(2ea in a PKG.) ...

Ratbuell, can you define "wonky"..
Buellistic, I went to the harley dealer and purchased new nuts, flanges, retaining rings and gaskets. I just told them I needed them for a 99 M2 using the buell race exhaust. Did I get the right ones? Frank.

You're going to notice (probably) a flat spot here or there in the powerband with only one of the breathing mods done. It'll probably be a little flat right off-idle, pick up at low RPM, then flatten out again around 3500ish. 4500 it should come to life again. If I recall correctly anyway...been a while since I ran a stock intake with aftermarket muffler (it was my '99 M2, back in '00). It won't be "unrideable" by any stretch...but it'll definitely be different from stock. Air cleaner and a rejet to match both, though? Watch out. It's a beast with the intake, exhaust, ignition box and jets!

Now, if Kim would just get comfortable on her 02 so I can start monkeying with it... ; )

Ratbuell, ok, I understand. I plan on adding an intake for sure, but funds limit that right now. I plan to run the stock intake for the rest of this summer and add an intake (along with other mods) over the winter. I have read a few times on "gutting" the stock airbox. Is that a good idea? will that help remedy the dead spots? Thanks! Frank.

Yeah you can do the econo-force with the gutted airbox and still leave the airbox on.

Economical options...

I found a K&N stock replacement filter for the factory airbox on ebay for something like $16, removing the snorkel and opening up the cup that hold in the filter is free, or use some plumbers tape, add a cheap plastic velocity ring from the dealership... cheap open airflow going in.

American Sport Bike has an inexpensive tall plastic stack my girls got me for father's day I plan to try in the stock air box. We'll see how it does, I want to be able to ride in the rain again.
