Hey all- So we were out riding yesterday (of course about 120 miles from home!) and my speedo on my 99 X1 quit working. Backlighting works fine, odometer functions as it should (except it does not increase in numbers). I have checked the connection of the speed sensor and the connector by the tank and both look good. I think this leads me to a bad/dirty speed sensor? My manual says to simply unbolt it to remove, but it doesn't want to come out- any suggestions? Am I barking up the wrong tree here? Can you suggest another tree? Thanks! -Andy | ||

I replaced mine about a month ago- had some trouble getting it out too. There is decent o-ring and I think a lip in there. I am (maybe a little too) aggressive when working on machinery so I took a flathead screwdriver and worked it out on both sides. After about 1/4 inch it came out pretty easy. After I replaced it, speedo worked just fine again. Good luck. | ||

Got the sensor out- it just took a little more persuasion that I was initially willing to use! :-p I cleaned it up real good, and also found a chaffed wire on the bike side of the speedo sensor connector. I insulated that and now I'm off to do a test ride... | ||

They are a bugger to get out! If you can get under it to pry that is the way to go. I took the screw out to take it out and thought I was doing something wrong so when I split the cases I checked it out and sure enough it was just a pain to get out. Keep at it man, it can be done. | ||

The speedo sensors on the tubers are a common failure. The fix is to get the latest model sensor for tubers, which has a built in 5v regulator. Or you can build your own regulator, and put it in line with an old model sensor. I have not heard of a sensor failing with a 5v regulator implemented. The XBs (except the '03 9R model) have a 5v regulated output from the ECM for the sensor. Tubers feed it unregulated 12v. Search the KV for 5v and sensor. You'll even find schematics. | ||

Ok. Well that didn't do it, so I'll order up a new speed sensor. Before I do, is there a way to test this one? Also, what part number am I looking for, in order to be sure that I get the one with the regulator? | ||

Andy It a pretty sure bet that its bad. look through the wiring diagram find the +5 ground and signal connections check for current to ground when a metal object goes by the tip. | ||

my X1 has same problem. Someone said that it is probly gettin a volt spike and frying it. So i shouls get one for an XB |
