The new and improved -D Big Twin isolator mod (drill the isolator out to a 1/2") has been frequently touted as on option for a replacement front isolator, but I have a big concern. When you use the D-Washer (6131Y) it will be permanently deformed (or destroyed in my case). The D-Washer has a relief cut in it to mate flush with the metal sleeve in the original isolator, but the -D isolator does not have a raised sleeve so there is a bending stress in the D-washer. This bending stress will fracture the D-washer! If you have done this mod and used the D-Washer I suspect that you did NOT use a torque wrench to the 105 ft-lb setting. Curious what some have you have done to resolve this issue. I suspect that one can fit a washer inside the D-Washer recess so it will mate flush with metal sleeve in the isolator. Or perhaps some of you are running the -D isolator upside down? I like the improved design of the -D over the factory replacement - but we need to find a safe way to use the functionality of the D-washer. The D-Washer is a "safety" washer to hold the engine in place in case the sleeve completely separates from the isolator. (Message edited by sloppy on June 13, 2009) | ||

I think the solution to add extra saftey margin would be to use a regular thick steel fender washer or 2. | ||

I did not install the D washer when I installed the -79D iso. As you said the D washer is the fail safe on the OEM isolator in case the metal totally separates from the rubber. As I understand it, the -79D has this feature integrated with the flat metal top that is attached to the sleeve, serving the same purpose is as the D washer. | ||
