Not sure if this is the right forum so feel free to move or pass along the info. Ironhorse Magazine issue #122 has a good article on rebuilding CV carbs to get some performance out of them. Going to try this on my Sportster soon.

Can't get that issue in bookstores or newsstands now, but could probably order a back issue if it's worth it. If you would, can you outline what it says to do?

I'm interested in rebuilding the high mileage carb on my S1 and was wondering if the article gets into hot rod stuff like boring and reshaping the venturi for a bigger butterfly or if it just suggests changing replaceable parts for go-fast goodies.

BUELLers:

Have 1997 S3T with a PRODUCE IMPROVED OEM CV Carb. ...

With the timing mark just coming into the rear of the timing plug hole and spark plugs gaped at .030 inch ...

Run a IDLE mixture screw out 2 1/2 turns from seat,#48 Low Speed,Slide hole drill out and SLIDE radius'ed, M2 needle raised .050 inch, and a #200 High Speed jet ...

Set my Fuel/Air Mixture with a "FUEL/AIR GAUGE" in the real world my riding down the road ...

Fuel Air mixture is 12 to 1 ...

"YES", if "i" stay off the THROTTLE "i" can get 45/50 MPG(if "i" detune the JETS a little, 56 MPG is possible) ...

MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!

I'm doing the same with an Air fuel ratio setup. It really takes the guess work out of tuning. But 12 to 1 sounds a little rich. I'm looking to run about 13:1 on the pilot, 13.5:1 on the needle and 13.5:1 for the main.

I'm not so much concerned with tuning the carb as I've already done that, but am wondering what is rebuildable on these carbs.

All the drop-in and screw-in parts can be easily replaced but things like butterfly shaft bushings and whatever the vacuum slide bears against are not so easy. Are these parts available from HD?

Buellistic, glad you chimed in. Have you replaced the vacuum slide in your high mileage carb? I'm on my second and it looks pretty worn out. If the slide is really sloppy, can it cause air leaks and off-idle Kehein cough?

12 to 1 is what everybody says is too rich, "BUT" that is what "i" run ...

13 to 1 will give you the best of both worlds, performance and gas mileage ...

"BUT" as you know BUELL riders can't seem to stay off the throttle, so there goes the gas mileage ...

Still running the OEM slide that came with the Carb. ...

Have not noticed any air leak problems ...

Everybody has said to cure the KEIHIN COUGH it has been un-screw the idle mixture screw(2 1/2 out) and put in a bigger Low Speed Jet ...

"Well", "i" found that raising the needle worked for me(just kept raising it till it cough'ed no more) ...

As far as rebuilding the Carb., "WELL" "i" have not even thought about it ...
