Bought an '98 S1 lightning engine for a build project. She has no wiring except off of the cam sensor and from the stator, that's it. Trying to run this simple and clean, for a bobber build. No blinkers, really basic. I have a solid state controller/harness for a chopper which does almost everything. But, going over the Buell schematics it looks like I will need the ignition module and starter relay. Do I need the ignition relay as well? Can I run dual single fire Dyna Coils or is she only going to take dual fire coils? Thanks in advance

Put it back in a stock frame and use the stock harness, you won't have any problems...

Rocdoc- Just a warning..You may get some interesting responses. Most people here aren't fans of using Buell parts to build other bikes. Especially since the S1 is considered to by the holy grail of tubers.

Thanks for all the help.
You guys are really great. I'll remember to return the favor.

BTW: I bought the engine ONLY from a wrecked Buell. No harness, nada, I didn't pull it so get a grip!

Yea i was going to post that,

ITS NOT LIKE HE BUTCHERED A BUELL!

I would think you would need the ignition relay.

I know people have run single fire systems on the bike, i dont know much about them though. I would check out the knowledge vault and go from there. As you can see, your not getting much help here.

Singlefire is easy if you have a whole kit. Most include a new pickup, wiring from there to the module, wiring from there to the coil, and power/ground wires to splice into the electrical system. I put a TwinTec system on an old Evo FLHP I used to have - pulled the stock nosecone cam sensor, put in the TwinTec module (the nosecone for this system had it ALL in the cam sensor), ran wires to a new S/E singlefire coil, and done. Abandoned the OEM wiring in place, and even left the OEM ignition box where it was.

I have the shop manual for my 98 S1W - if you'd like copies/scans of the wiring pages, just let me know. Should be pretty straightforward, though - hook the stator to the charging setup / battery. Off the battery run your fuses and relays for body stuff - lights, signals, etc. Run the new ignition pickup setup to a coil (either new or OEM). Speedo sensor is front wheel driven on this year, so no VSS to worry about on the trans. May need to fab/set up your own tach drive off the new ignition system...wire in a setup for the low oil light...but that's about it. Ain't much in there, even OEM ; )

It should be the same as sportster wiring. You will need the starter relay or continue to buy new starter switches. Too much direct amperage/heat.

One question: Have you ridden a bobber and a tuber?

I can't imagine preferring the handling of the bobber.
