Author Message   Pkforbes87 Posted on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 04:54 pm:        Every time I get back from riding I hook up the battery tender, and every time the battery is under 80% charged. The tender shows solid red while the battery is charging and less than 80%, solid green while it's charging and more than 80%, then flashing green when it's 100% Anyway, is it a bad sign that the bike's charging system is not maintaining anything better than 80%? I've read before that if a battery is getting weak then it puts a lot of wear and tear on the bike's charging system. If that's what's happening then I'd rather just buy a new battery now and save myself from having to replace a stator, or VR, or anything. The battery is always sitting at 100% when I unhook the tender and go for a ride, and it shows no difficulty at all turning the engine over.   Brinnutz Posted on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 06:15 pm:        How old is it?   Pkforbes87 Posted on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 06:22 pm:        No idea. No stickers anywhere on it or any other dates. Should show 13.5v or more. If not, the charging system needs inspection. As batteries usually last about 5yrs, yours is due anyway. And check the conditon/tightness of the battery cables at both ends, and the VR ground. Can't hurt. Dave   Sloppy Posted on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 09:25 pm:        Your battery is likely fine. Battery Tenders do exactly what you describe even on a 100% full battery (it's also in their manual). To see it for yourself, after you charge your battery, unplug the tender for an hour and then plug it right back in. You typically have PLENTY of warning of battery failure. Difficulty turning over the engine is the first sign. If this happens then get a new battery...   Kyrocket Posted on Sunday, May 31, 2009 - 09:38 am:        Take it to a local auto parts store and they'll check it for free. They can check it's charging ability and simulate it under load. Easy to do and the price is right.   Kalali Posted on Sunday, May 31, 2009 - 10:40 am:        My tender does the same exact thing. Sloppy is right on. It take a minute or so before the flashing green comes up, even when the battery is at 100%.
