about 1 out of 15-20 times the bike show neutral but when i hit the starter button the starter grinds but then it pops off so not sure whats going on i guess, mabye not all the way in nuetral???? motor stops in a odd place and just happens to catch the gear in a wierd spot.

check your ground strap.
Not enough current to mash the gear in with enough force perhaps.

+1 on low voltage, Also i have seen this problem with a bad contact on the starter button.

I was having that problem along with my HID light going out when starting. Very intermittent. Turns out the negative battery post had broken. It was a Drag Specialties battery with a slot that the actual connect slides in to allow either a top or front connection. The material that holds the connector broke. I'd recommend staying away form this type of battery.

make sure your starter is bolted down tight... they are known to come loose and cause an almost impossible to find oil leak and an ocasional grinding noise when you start your bike

if its loose your gonna have to take off the primary cover and use a ballhead allan wrench to get past the teeth on the back of the clutch basket to tighten it down....
