will an X1 engine fit in it?

I've got the opportunity and desire. If an X1 engine will bolt in then I could put an S2 back on the road very easily.

..the wheels are turning and the hamster is getting dirty, dirty ideas..

I think you'd be better to shoehorn a XB motor in there.

AFAIK, an X1 motor should bolt right in. Plumbing/electrical for EFI should be fun...unless you're going to carb it.

Eff that I want an efi s2. Shouldn't be too bad since I have all the x1 fi parts and wiring harness.

Cool. Ill post pics tomorrow if I get myself a frame.

X-1 motor bolts right in.To FI it you need all the proper wiring and sensors. XB motor will NOT even come close to bolting in. Completely different rear mounting.

Oh, I bet an EFI S2 would be very cool. But you're going to have to either build a new hybrid harness, or (the way I'd do it) build an overlay harness so you're not hacking an S2 harness. The overlay can be set up to run your ECM, sensors, and fuel pump; the original chassis wiring can be used for lights and instruments.

Should be VERY cool. Keep us posted : )

Just so you know, the idea was mine first ; ). But I wanna use DELPHI EFI from an HD so my build will take a LOT more interesting engineering to have a running concept, which is why I put it off until funds are of better supply. Good luck with the build. It should be interesting to see how you tackle the controls issue. If it were me, I'd buy an X1 top tree and wiring harness and use the X1's 7/8" bars and controls rather than try to adapt the S2's HD controls. I love and prefer the HD controls, but 7/8" bars are cool too. Not everyone has massive meathooks like I do (8" diameter across the hand).

Don't forget that you will also have to either adapt a fuel pump to the stock gas tank or you can see if the X1 tank will got under the tank cover. If it does, LMK because that's what I'm hoping will work. Should be interesting to see where you hide all those wires though. When I get around to my build, I'm gonna run a Speedcell battery so that I can use the extra space in the battery cavity to hold as much wiring as I can fit (a Speedcell battery is ~2"x4"x6" and weighs 1 lb, but it's $400).

Personally, I'd leave the bike harness (and controls) intact and add the powertrain overlay harness. Splice in start/run/kill wires to the powertrain overlay and roll.

Getting ready to do it on a cage - my '72 Plymouth Satellite is about to get a 2005 5.7 EFI Hemi with 5 speed autostick : ) Gonna leave the car's wiring as-is, and add the engine, trans, fuel pump, ECM, TCM, and control harnesses. The only places the pair shall meet will be battery power, alternator output, and I'll have to figure out a speedo drive (currently the car has a gear-sender in the tailshaft housing; the '05 uses a hall effect through the ECM or TCM, I forget which). I think I'm also going to have to come up with a runaround for the "missing" ABS system since the ECM uses the wheelspeed sensors for both the traction control ("missing" as well, burnouts in an old station wagon ROCK) and the MDS system....it'll be *fun*!! : )

Turns out it's an S3, and more than a frame.
I ran the vin on Buell.com and it's a '97 model. The seller had very limited knowledge of the bike's history. It was passed down to him in it's current condition and has just been sitting behind a shed for a few years. Seller did know that the missing parts were used in a chopper build, and title went with the motor so I'll need to get a new title for this, or title it as the X1 motor that will be in it. (dunno if that's possible or legal?)

How much is all of this worth?

And will my X1 header fit or do I need to go back and buy the S3 header? It's the older style header.

An S3 will be even easier, but not as sexy. You can use the X1 header if you don't mind beating the heck outa the rear headpipe to clear the frame. A handful of others here on the board have done the same. Or you can get an earlier pipe (which looks better anyway) and drill a hole and weld a bung to fit the O2 sensor. Without a title though I wouldn't give more than $600 for all, cuz titlework can be expensive.

I agree - an S2 would have been much sexier. This one still won't be just bolt-ons since the '97 wasn't EFI yet.

I'm thinking flat black and stainless should be the only visible colors on this one, so beating the hell out of the pipes won't be an issue. They'll probably get wrapped. Gonna try to spend as little as possible while not skimping in the areas of reliability and comfort. I have basically an entire X1 plus boxes of spare parts to play with - no point in spending money on the old header even though it would look better.

Thanks again for the advice everyone. I'm gonna try to use some self control and just let all the parts sit until I get used to making mortgage payments. I'll be closing on my first home in the next few weeks.(scary)

I'm reading from my phone on a plane, but if that's the bronze frame, I know of someone who has the matching wheels... =)

I think PK is seriously bitten by the Buell bug...
An "intervention" may be warranted here before he goes to the deep end...

On a serious note, I envy your enthusiasm and your mechanical skills. All the best.

Sleez, I'll keep those wheels in mind.
Please PM me - Would you be interested in a trade for PM wheels or cash only?

Thanks Kalali. I don't think I can claim mechanical skills when all I've done is bolt on parts. This project may require me to do some actual custom work - it should be another good learning experience.

btw I paid $200 for the pile. Got the seat and airbox with it, and there's a lot of small stuff in the airbox but I haven't even looked through it yet.}

Looks like a good find, let me know how the title issue goes, i was going to buy something similar but it was a s1w with no title. I ended up passing on it.

Sorry Rex, I don't have anything related to making a carbed motor run except for the fuel tank, and have already arranged to trade it for an FI tank.
