This is a recent issue. I will be riding along when out of the blue the ehgine cuts out. Red Engine light comes on and if I squeeze the clutch and rev the motor it will stay running. Once I release the clutch slowly it wants to die again. I do the reving for a minute or two then ease out the clutch while rev'ing and it will go again.
No warning of any stuttering or hesitation prior to the drop off and it comes randomly. I do have a Race ECM (about 6 yrs old). I'm guessing its an ECM problem. can a RACE ECM be reflashed?

Check your fuse box contacts for corrosion.
My X1 was doing dumb crap at one time and it was due to the fuses being corroded.

Take each one out, scrape it off, blast it with WD40 and jam them in and out a bunch of times.

Don what codes did the ECM through? Check them it should get you started in the right direction.

"Take each one out, scrape it off"

..then reinstall them with dielectric grease. you won't have to worry about corrosion again.

it works well on all electrical connections.

In addition to above check battery posts for cracks, tight clean connection and check ground strap.

I'll Start checking the electrical points - thanks.
I only have the "short curcuit" plug to read codes and the list I have does not include the straight 10times flashing it was doing.

Sounds like the side-stand switch issue. the switch in the side stand works with a switch on the clutch lever. The side stand switch corrodes easily and can intermittently fail to cause this problem.
This is a federally mandated "idiot" switch. I have put a jumper wire in the side-stand switch connector to short out the switch and eliminate this problem.

That is the classic sidestand switch failure: in gear and clutch in, engine runs; clutch out, engine dies. Yup!
