Does anyone sell a cheaper version of the so called "Fuel Tank Accents" (pieces which fill the sides of the tank when the airbox and the air duct are removed) for X1? I know Al at American Sport Bike has two versions, CF and paintable plastic, and I am sure they are really nice but they are a little too pricey for me.
Thanks.

I got the CF ones from ebay. They are not bad looking but it they are CF then its only the top layer. The back side is flat black almost a plastic look to them. I am very happy with them and would buy them again. For the price even if the CF fades or hazes up I can always paint them and still be under the price of the fiber glass ones.

I would be careful when you buy the "cheaper" carbon fiber pieces as you could either end up spending more money in the long run just getting them to work or having to spend much more time getting them to work. Example, I recently purchased a carbon fiber undertail piece and a carbon fiber dash cover from a company (not of the USA) on ebay. The undertail was around $110 and the dash cover was around $50-$60. They looked very nice when I got them but when I went to install the undertail piece I found out two things. First was it did not have the rubber edging on it to make a more water tight seal with the tailpiece and I could not find anything that would work (and I looked all over town). Second, and most important, was the absence of a special "bracket" on the back side of the undertail piece that slides between the crosspiece of the tailpiece and the bracket the ECM is mounted on. This special "bracket" pulls the carbon fiber piece up against the tailpiece and, along with the taillight and turnsignals, holds the piece to the bike. Without this bracket (which is held inplace by tightning the bolts on the middle seat bracket) you have to do some creative improvising which I have neither the time nor the desire to do. I contacted the company and they suggested something another customer did (which I did not quite understand) or I could return the part. I chose the latter. Now I went to install the carbon fiber dash cover. When something is called a "cover" you naturally think that it is to cover the original piece of equipment right? I was wrong. At least in that it would not fit over the original dash no matter what I tried it just would not fit. So, then I think that maybe they meant for it to replace the original cover. Wrong! I mounted it to the dash mounts on my X1 and it looked really nice. Ok, I thought, so far so good and installed the indicator light bezel and ignition switch. Not a great fit but acceptable. Next came the gauges. The X1 gauges have a rubber ring that insulates them from the dash for vibration reasons and with the carbon fiber piece being thinner than the original dash the rubber slot was too wide and allowed the gauges to move quite a bit. I though, no problem, when I put the cups on the back of the gauges and tighten them down everything will be snug as a bug in a rug. Damn! I was wrong again!?! The gauges would spin all around, so this told me it could not be used by itself as a dash. So, having already spent $25 sending the undertail piece back to China I was not about to spent any more money to send the dash back so I emailed the company again and said the dash did not work but I was not sending it back because of shipping costs internationally. To their credit the company did refund the money I paid for the undertail piece even before recieving it back (I paid throgh PayPal) and to my suprise they refunded my money I paid for the dash and did not ask for it back. That's good business. I have to say the carbon fiber piece looked really nice as a dash and I was disappointed it didn't work. So what did I end up with you ask?! I found a carbon fiber undertail from American Sport Bike on Craigslist in my area that was brand new with the correct bracket and rubber moulding for $200. It went on like a charm with no creative mounting and looks great. I also ordered (haven't gotten it yet) a polished Billet Aluminium dash from them. It was a little expensive but I'm worth it. I've always lived by the motto that you get what you pay for and I will spend a little more to get exactly what I need so it will work correctly and will last longer. I know money is sometimes a major factor in what you can buy but buying cheap is not always the cheapest route. That's my 2 cent's and I'll climb down off my soapbox now. Thanks for listening.

Do you want to get rid of the CF dash? I had good luck with my CF tank accents from East Carbon. I would be interested in giving a shot to make you CF dash work.

I'll sell it to you for $20 shipping included. PM me your address and I'll send it to you but if you get it to work I want pictures and to know how you did it. It really classes up the look of the dash. I hope it'll work for you.

Thanks for all the input. The thing is I really don't care if the pieces are CF or high quality plastic/fiberglass. May be if I had the the factory CF version of the bike I would go for the CF accents but all I want is just cover the blank spots. What surprises me is that the American Sport Bike does have the fiberglass/plastic parts that I want but it comes unpainted and will end up costing more than a CF version.

Scarecrow - I'm Going to have to pass. I really would like to get that piece but I've got too many projects going on. I just started to work on the Duce and won't have much time to get it done and move to Orlando by the end of the month. Who ever gets it please post some pictures because I will most likely be getting the CF or billet dash for my X1.

I don't want to ruin anyone's deal here , but the dash works perfectly all by itself. A little dab of superglue holds the rubber cups in place and keeps the guages from spinning. A small dab holds the cups to the gauges, and a second tiny dab holds the cups to the dash.

I have the east carbon dash, I've done this, and the guages never move. If you notice, the cups were held to the original plastic dash with an adhesive as well.

Also, it's cool to take a heat gun and remove the pegasus logo from your stock dash, then superglue that to the carbon fiber unit. Same goes for the off/park/ign indicator.

The only real problem with the dash is that the holes are a hair too small for the stock allen screws. Run them through a couple time and they fit fine though.

Thanks for sharing Lowroad. See, didn't I tell you the carbon dash looks awesome. I'm glad you got it to work for you and there's some good ideas for Carbonlightning to use to mount it. I will still honor my deal with Carbonlightning if he still wants it. Besides, I am getting the polished Billet one from American Sport Bike delivered on Monday. I'll see how that one works and let you know. By the way, I just finished installing a new gas tank cover and American Sport Bike's carbon fiber tank accents. They went on perfectly and look awesome, just like their undertail panel and license plate frame. IT'S ALMOST DONE!!!

Scarecrow - Post some pics of the billet dash when you get it installed. I'd like to see the difference. Right now I am in the polishing mode. Just took about 30 pieces off the Duce to get polished or chromed depending on cost.

Here's some pictures of the finished (I think) machine. It has the Billet dash from American Sport Bike on it. I think the carbon fiber dash looks better but I didn't like the looseness of the guages (although Lowroad had some good suggestions).

I have to stop hanging out here. It just serves to remind me of how "un" polished my Bike is.

I don't polish anything. I just keep it clean, serviceable, and pretty. Then I ride the hell out of it.

Lowroad, really nice bike.
Just a couple of quick questions about the Forcewinder. Why do you still have that pipe that goes into the lower back of the air cleaner? I thought that was for the breather. And where does the IAT go on the elbow?
I am just a hair away from either getting a FW or build an Ecowinder like a few folks have done here.
Thanks.

that "pipe" is the IAT.

Kalali,

The bike in the pictures above is mine. As for the pipe on the lower back of the air cleaner that IS the IAT. You have to do a little modification to the stock IAT to get it to fit into the aluminum tube but it's not hard. There is another breather tube that connects to the bolt breathers on each cylinder that goes into the back of the air filter as well, you just can't see it in the pictures.

I took the bike out yesterday for a short ride for its maiden voyage since it's facelift and had a little trouble keeping the front wheel down in 1st and 2nd gear (the good kind of trouble). Only engine mod I did was the Forcewinder. The bike came with an E series White Bros slip on. I was thinking about replacing the stock ECM with the race version but I'm not sure I want this thing any faster. This weekend I plan on new syn3 oil and filter, then some fun. These are before and after shots.
