Congrats! I have been following your progress and know you put a lot into getting it back on the road...can you tell a difference in power at this point?

I can't really use enough rpm range to feel the power, but there's a hint of more pull up to 3k anyway which is as far as I can take her for 500 miles

I'm going to lean the mixture a little before I ride her again and see what a difference that makes. I'm hoping that as long as I change the maps proportionally I won't throw the upper rpm range off. I dunno.. I'll get the 3k rpm and under range as close to 100afv as I can and just wait to see how that affects other areas.

But to answer your question - yes I felt an increase in power this morning. Even as rich as I was running her I could feel it.

It'll only get better as the motor breaks in. Good for you. Nice, very nice.

Thanks : D

I'm so damn proud of this bike.. can't even put it into words. When I started tearing her apart I really didn't think I could get her back together working and would just have to sell parts to make my money back.

Thanks to a handy factory service manual and lots of helpful advice from badweb members she went together with no major issues!

Thank you to everyone who answered questions during my rebuild, and taught me some things before I had to learn from my own expensive mistakes! Al at American Sport Bike and Dan at NRHS were both extremely helpful as well. I called them both on separate occasions and wasted their time by asking newbish questions but they explained things on my level and were a huge help!

'99 X1 tank covers had the nostrils in the top like that. I got mine early last summer brand new from a dealer. If you plan on painting it anyway, they're available in primer and a little cheaper that way.

Yours will turn out every bit as good as this one Wilson. My advice is as follows:

check the main seal (almost forgot mine)
check the oil filter check ball (almost forgot mine)
check that BOTH circlips are installed on each wrist pin (almost forgot mine)

You know we've got the two fastest color combinations ever offered on a Buell, right?

Now that I'm done with Betty, it's time to give Sandra some blazing orange / volcano grey treatment.

Congrats Well done!

On the intake manifold, pull the fuel rail
2 wires ( mark one for location )
2 clips and a bolt
2 throttle body mount bolts

remove the intake largely as a unit.
pulling the fuel rail opens the path up and makes it easier to get to those @#$%$% bolts!
Intake seals are a bit of a pita.

again congrats, I may try your method of install for pistons and jugs
please keep us posted on the life of those nici- jugs
my front iron one cracked and If I have any more issues before wear out this time and money permits nicis' go back on

Oldog,

Phil has got the Iron Lined ones...I have the Nikasil's that I'll be putting on here soon and will report back, though it won't be ridable for awhile as I have a short wait on a motor mount...The wait is well worth it though!

While you're waiting come and put mine together. I have to leave Friday and I'm still buttoning up. I didn't get out of the garage 'til 1:00 this morning. That thing turned out great PK but I think you need a new name now.

Job well done, specially great attention to detail. You should take it out to bike shows...
As a side note, I like that you left the left air scoop. Somehow it looks balanced with the FW on the other side.

I had a shop do the polishing. I started on the millenium pegs, but decided that I don't have the patience for it.

Kalali - The left scoop/FW combo is growing on me as well. I would have liked to take the scoop off and just put the tank dressings on both sides to expose more of the engine, but in the past I've noticed a difference in rear cylinder temperature when riding without the scoop attached, so just decided to put it back on.

My 2000 X1 which is the one that started out being blue/orange is Sandra and there's a good reason for that. The name Black Betty doesn't really have a reason behind it.. it's just the first thing I thought of when I bought the 2002. Now it's kind of set in my brain so I think I'll just call her Betty from now on.

Oldog - Wilson's right. I went with iron lined cylinders. It will be interesting to see how things develop with his engine and mine since they have the different cylinder linings.

I noticed that you are running a high micron oil filter. Has it effected your oil pressure or temps any? I remember a thread where someone here had an oil pressure gauge and saw 5-10psi drops or increases in the oil pressure directly related on which oil filter was used. IIRC the temp of the motor was also effected with the restriction of oil flow.

I don't have any way of reading oil pressure but the light stays off, so it must be acceptable for the ECM.

This evening I went for about an 80 mile ride to a cool little restaurant on RT 66 and back. I hooked up EcmSpy the second I got home and was reading 311*(F) cylinder temp, and the gauge in my dipstick was right at 200*(F). I asked in another thread and have been told that those temps are low-normal.

Other good news - since I got an AFV of 90.2% by running maps 10% richer than the race maps, I dropped them to 5% richer today before my ride and came home to an AFV of exactly 100% : D

I actually did the first oil change tonight with 111 miles on the new top end.

Oil was dark grey w/ a green tint. I used lots of lucas assembly lube (green) though so I guess that's normal?

The filter magnet had a lot of stuff on it which kinda scares me, but I guess that's normal too during break-in?

I cleaned the filter off in some diesel and got it all put back together.

I'll at a minimum change oil again when I hit 500 miles, possibly sooner depending on how the oil looks 'tween now and then. Oil is cheaper than this motor was, so I've got no problem being overcautious.

Phillip - When I built the engine in my GSXR1K I had similar looking bits of metal in my filter also. I didn't use a filter like that but cut mine open to see what was going on. After the 3rd oil change it cleared up. Just make sure you aren't getting any big chunks of broken metal, only small shavings.

Tubers ROCK!

Well she's breaking in nicely - I already started losing hardware. This morning leaving a gas station I felt the left side scoop droop onto my leg. Sure enough, the furthest aft button head screw was missing and I couldn't find it. I just cut one of the zip ties off of the wiring harness and it was still long enough to hold the scoop onto the clamp right there..

Another rider started talking to me while I was tying the scoop back up, and asked how much a bike like mine costs. I said I've got almost exactly $7k in mine and he refused to believe it. I almost felt guilty about making his $20k cruiser look bad. ; ) Almost.
