The shock on my 02 Lighting was either replaced already or not affected by the recall. I'm not exactly sure the milage on my bike (aftermarket gauges) but my current shock is shot.

I've read that rebuilding or replacing it with the same shock is more a temporary bandaid. The vibrations of the motor cause the premature failure. I'm going to spend $200-300 again in 5-10k miles (about 1 summer)

Penske and Works have a much better shock, and it's cheaper to rebuild, but it comes with a hefty price tag. If I'm going to spend $1000 on it, I want some wow factor out of it.

What about an air ride setup? Adjustability. Supposed to have a much smoother ride. The bags last a long time. I know they make it for an XB. Any thoughts?

I haven't heard of anyone making an air ride system that works like our pull shock does, just compression shocks. There is a company on ebay selling a crazy expensive shock for the tuber with a linkage system to convert to a compression shock. Again I haven't heard of any using this either. The Works or Penske are the best option. When my stock shock fails I will be getting a Penske (mostly because it has a ride height adjustment also).

2002 is too new for a recall.
The shocks on my 2000 bike lasted:
Original = 8000
Factory replacement = 48000
Ebay $70 replacement = Starting to feel "wrong" now after about 35000 miles.

I'm just saying that perhaps the stockers aren't as bad as you think they are.

what I have seen of the shocks parts so far I believe that it was intended to be life time in terms of longevity, it is fairly well made it was not intended to be serviced, but parts are out there and BenM2 has written up a teardown for the shock and has provided great detail, I have pulled the spring off of mine and when I finish it I will I will offer the tool out for loan. ( the tool to compress the spring )
