Any recommendations

HD just tried to tell me the race ecm that buell sells to the public cannot be tuned by them! But i could tune it with ECM spy!

I have a project that is being worked on and it is going to need to be tuned for the motor work i am having done.
I dont trust HD enough to let them tune anything, I need to know what you guys are doing for tuning after engine work here is what i got
1250cc big bore kit
xb heads stage 2 porting
7mm valves with max head size on them
Race ecm
supertrap exhaust 12 discs and open ended
Race intake

This is going to cost around 3k and i want it to just right and i want to keep the EFI!

Do i need a custom map i am @ 5,500 feet above sea level and i want this to run perfect and make max power i dont want it running lean or rich!!

I have only reflashed my stock ecm with a race eeprom. You might want to check with Gunter (The programmer who created ECM Spy) or here: http://xoptiinside.com/home

I need a X1 select seat!

Nice link thanks, This has been biting me all day. I thought i would have to get an auto tune kit for $899.95 or a thunder max ecm module so it could be tuned correctly.

Prey:
Find a tuner with an eddy current dyno, that has exhaust gas probe(s)

an eddy current brake allows the operator to set load conditions for tuning at specific points in the range, the exhaust gas probes allow you to optimize the combustion based on the exhaust gas make up have you checked to see which sponsor is closest to you?

You got FMJ on the west coast
You got CycleRama in the southeast
You got Johnson in the north east
I think Revolution in the north west
and many sponsor dealers have reputable shops have you checked them?

The most important question Why cant the installing shop do the tune? if they cant you should possibly reconsider using that shop.

Hd says that tube frame ECM can't be altered,
Find another shop! you know that is wrong!

Its your money ....

One last thought, one shop builds the other tunes, If issues come up what prevents a finger pointing match? ( with you in the middle? )

I cant answer for you but for me 3 large takes a while to raise ( or pay off )

I will find out tomorrow what is up with the shop. This started when a comment was made on a phone call to the installer about tuning the bike. I have the newer version of ECMSPY and i dont see why a good dyno guy couldn't understand the program. One of the above mentioned sponsors was rude on the phone and didn't want help me at all so i wont be dealing with them. So i settled on another shop closer to me.

"He just said he doesn't do much tuning in the fuel injection" They have a dyno and im am sure they can tune it to a point, But i wanted also custom tuning of the ECM eeproms and fuel maps to optimize and compliment the motor's (maximum power)

I have talked to some other people about some maps now and may go this way also

Thanks Oldog this is exactly the info im fishing for here i want this motor to scream and be reliable.

Prey a rule of thumb in your quest for PONYs

the faster it goes the quicker it blows

any one with the smarts to tune a machine can get a handle on ECM spy, perhaps you can offer to participate as the computer operator, the dyno guy can tell you what is needed and you dial it in, then re-test
( it will take longer but you will also learn things )

I will put on my asbestos shorts here

"Tuning" = establishing the best rate of fuel delivery and ignition timing for a given set of load parameters. typicaly based on direct observation and Experience

The "tuner" makes decisions based on experience as far as fuel and spark "settings", at times they may recomend or provide mechanical enhancements to improve the operation of the engine for the user.

will you please PM me about your experience relative the board sponsor?

thanks jim

I would love to go down to jims shop but he is just to far for me to do it, I have to be back in time to run my business i can't afford not to be here at work. Now i can make a run of 570 miles though easy enough.

Oldog

I checked with the shop and i am good to go he already has an ecm spy cable and a few maps that he said will get us where we need to be and tuning the ecm should be pretty easy to do, He asked if could help and i said yes in the newer ecm spy software there is a much better tuning guide than on the old software and it was as easy a just reading the steps and he said that would work just fine. Also he said he has done most of the EFI tunes he does using direct link but not so many with ecm spy.

This has been the toughest week with all my friends out riding and me watching everyone having fun enjoying the weather.

Oh by the way i will document this ongoing project as well as take photos of all the dyno stuff we do and all the mods going on the bike

Kevin Cameron wrote about Johnson and his work.

(Not affiliated with Johnson and pay attention to KC's writing.)

Kali asked, "You got Johnson in the north east. Whereabouts in NE?"

Yes that is why i am going with the xb heads they have a superior smaller port size this coupled with the port work and the cams along with the smallest squish band possible and bigger valve heads with stem diameter of 7mm will make an excellent combo.

That article on the intake and ports is exactly how i decided on what i was going to do with mine.

I have been researching this for about a year and seeing what works the best, Then bang there goes the motor ok now is the time to do it.

I was going to do this before the motor went
