I have a 2001 X1 FI, I bought a muffler repack kit for the Buell Pro or Race Series Muffler. After taking out the rivets I saw the can was empty minus a few flakes. I'm not the original owner and had wondered if the previous owner removed the packing or if it just blew out. I have seen in four stroke that not having the packing can be torque robbing if I'm not mistaken. I guess what I'm getting at has anyone found this bike to perform better without the packing? should I not repack it? I know sufficient back pressure is needed to have max acceleration or torque. I'm interested in what you guys have seen Also new to the forum, thanks ahead a time, I live in NH, married, kids, house. You know the rest. |

The packing likely blew out. Packing from the factory might last 2000 miles if you're lucky. Do the right thing and get it repacked - there's far too many squids already... no use adding yourself to the list. |

Packing will make it sound a lot better too. You still get the deep rumble minus a lot of high frequency crap. |

My V&H SS2R was also missing the packing (and the baffle) when I bought my bike. I guess the previous owner must have liked the sound (louder without the packing/baffle). The bike was running lean so I got the packing/baffle. It not only sounds better now (deeper rumble) but it also has a little stronger low/mid-range torque. The V&H guy told me that these bikes like some back-pressure and I agree. |

How often should you repack the muffler? |

According to the V&H tech guy, it depends on how you ride but generally between 5000-6000 miles. The change in the sound of the exhaust is usually a good indicator |
