As i have stated b4 i have been helping a friend with his top end rebuild on his sporty, I went to his shop the other day and i looked at the engine.

The heads cylinders have been removed so as you look at it the rods are sticking out the case.

I grab one of the rods and wiggled it side to side (left to right) primary to cam case if you will.

There is almost no side play in the rear rod, not so with the front there is around a 16th inch play.

I thought ohh crap your motor is going down, this indicated rod bearing failure right?

He thinks that i am wrong, i think its going to fail fast with this condition.

That can be fixed, but not without splitting the cases. Don't tell me that he intends to just button it all back up...

Are you talking side play or wiggle/twist?
Is the play at the top of the rod or the big end?

Ok, so are we talking side play as in clearance in the fork with a feeler gauge or just an eyeball guestimate.

Side to side is not that big of a problem, UP and DOWN in a different story. If you can feel up and down motion, then you need new rod bearings and crank pin.

I think JRamsey is referring to the "knife and fork" setup as the connecting rods are usually called since one slides in between the other. Imagine cutting a steak with a fork and knife. The fork is in the rear cylinder and the knife in the front. As of this minute I'm waiting on some lower end info. to start rebuilding. See the shrapnel and lots of it parts I and II threads. My middle bearings went south and the cage was COMPLETELY gone. A little side to side is normal but any up and down and you'll be splitting cases, no way around it. I've got some pics that I'd be happy to send you but right now they're too big to post up here.

Make sure he checks it in different positions. I at first couldn't find any up and down play but when I rotated it around a bit by hand I could find it. I guess the bearings were so chewed up that they were bunching up and settling in one area and not letting it move but once rotated around they would allow the movement.

BTW, why the top end rebuild? Was it necessary or just to freshen things up? If he was having problems that may be the culprit. One way to find out is to put an extension magnet into the lower end and see if anything comes out. Any metal down there may warrant further inspection. Just my .02, take it for what you paid for it.
